Title: What are these?
Post by: Mrs Ava on July 01, 2004, 18:20:09
Couple of plants I have in the garden and I have no idea what they are!

This is a small shrubby plant with super furry leaves and little white flowers.  Not evergreen and only about 8 inches tall.  Grew from seed 2 years ago but my wonderful son removed all the labels one day in the greenhouse and gave them to me in a heap, and I have looked in books but have no idea!

And this pretty little flower has appeared on what I assume is a bulb I am growing.  I was given a selection of baby bulbs from a friend but with no labels!  Any ideas?  ;D ??? ;D

The little bulb is Anomatheca laxa, a pretty little member of the Iris family from South Africa, will seed itself all over if it likes your garden.
The shrub I have in the garden, but for the life of me I cannot find a name....................yet.

Here is a little problem, the picture looks like Dorycnium hirsutum, but the description does not match that plant which is evergreen and up to 2 metres tall.

Chaz!  You plonk! hehehehehe.  Not a very good money plant if it only chucks out pennies!  ;D  Is it hardy then Eric?

As for the little furry critter, I have googled that name Eric and it sure looks the same, and some descriptions do say a compact shrub so maybe mine is just a little fella!  Altho I said it isn't evergreen, it is planted in my woodland area, so quite shadey, and by late last summer it was looking really tatty, and had lost nearly all of its leafs, so I hacked it back nervously, but it did come back just as pretty.

You are soooooooooo clever!  ;D Thanks!!!

Both of them are hardy, and both like sunny well drained positions. The bulb also comes in pure white and white with a red centre. The shrub in full sun smells to me of hot jam when it is in flower.
