Title: Eating holey spinach
Post by: allanwoolley on November 03, 2007, 18:52:16
Am I right in trying to convince my wife that the 'holey' spinach that I have grown. organically. is better for us to eat than the pristine, perfectly formed produce from the supermarket which I suspect she secretly envies?

It's a damned sight cheaper.  And, yes, it has to taste better than something picked in Kenya 7 days ago?

Yes, its 100% better.

(If all else fails, tell your dear lady - more holes = fewer calories!) ;)

you could try saying that the shop stuff is washed with chlorine water stronger than a swimming pool, or you could try saying - if it's good enough for the slugs, it's good enough for you (darling)

Had similar objections with holey spuds and slightly tatty sprouts - overcame the objections by peeling on the plot. Saves bringing the peelings back over too.

A better way of saying it is mine..
I'm always suspicious of "perfect" fruit and veg.. if it looks good enough to eat why hasn't something beaten me to it...
;D

As I always tell the kids "you won't see the holes when you eat it"

I always reckon "if the bugs don't want to eat it, why should I?"
