Title: Pea spacing?
Post by: pjb on October 29, 2007, 08:37:05
I've just planted some peas (douce provence) sheltered spot etc...., the packet called for them to be planted at 2 inch intervals so there is 2 inches between each pea in all directions, do you leave them like this once they (hopefully) grow? or do I need to thin them?
Sorry if it's a bit basic, first allotment and all that (well that's my excuse).
Thanks.

they can be planted a bit closer as well - when I sow mine I use trays that have 15 square and deep modules to them and I sow 5 peas to each square and when it comes time to plant out I can gently lift each group of plants and plonk in a little drawn out trench, each square virtually next to each other - they always do great - not all seeds germinate so you can cram a bit  :)

we put ours in guttering, lucky if they get 2 inches  ;D
we also hang them up so's the mice can't get at them..gives them a fighting chance  ;D

Slight variation of the same theme, I sow mine in 3" pots 3 peas to the pot. Pots are later planted in a double staggered row with 6" spacings. The reason for sowing in pots is to deny the mice a free lunch.

Plant peas like dots on a dice ( 5 side)

That's the way they plant broadies in Italy. groups of 5 and much closer together. I'm always being told in no uncertain terms "You've planted them much too far apart."  Makes sense, they hold each other up.

I always start off with a nice dice-5 2" apart, but by the end of the row I'm bored, so just chuck them in any old how. :-[

Pre soak your peas in paraffin, mice don't like that
