Title: turnip / swede growing out
Post by: kt. on October 20, 2007, 23:04:44
Always had poor, if not no results with swede. This year has hopefully been a turning point with a slight hiccup. They are coming along fine but a little small. Probably need two to make a decent size family sunday lunch. But they are growing half out of the ground.

Is this how they normally grow?

Don't know why it works, but I've always grown my swedes in the shadow of a taller plant, first year sweet corn, second year sprouts and this year near the globe artichokes! I think they're a little shy  ;)

planted mine too close together last year. all rotted.

had 5 this year, planted through membrane spaced much further apart.  All grew to an edible size.  Some were chomped by "things" but once i'd cut the bad bits out they tasted ok and yes they were half in half out.

all my turnips have grown sitting on top of the soil.  first year of growing them so just thought that's what they did !

;D
