Good job I was able to hobble up the garden yesterday to pick the last of the runner beans and courgettes because we had our first frost today. :D
Here in SW London the dew on car roofs froze overnight, I'd fleeced all my chillies and aubs but there didn't seem to have been any ground frost in the garden. Tomatoes (unfleeced) seem ok but it can take a day or so for the damage to show
Not sure about the allotment - won't be able to get there until tomorrow evening.
This reminds my of something I was thinking of asking but worrying that it was a stupid question. Oh well, can't be any stupider than having all your veg die for want of asking a question can it?
The books go on about protecting stuff with fleece once the frosts start. So I've got myself some fleece.
But it's the application that I'm slightly unsure about. Am I ment to put it over the plants each evening and then come back in the morning, once it's warmed up a little, and uncover them? If so, this means going to the plot twice a aday - something that I don't really have time for. Or do I just cover them during cold spells and uncover when it warms up a bit - hoping that enough light gets through the fleece to stop them dying?
See, told you it was a stupid question ::)
You can leave the fleece on as it allows water and light through it.
It was 4.1 degrees celsius in my garden last night in Godalming Surrey. Enough for a frosted windscreen.
bbc said it wasn't going to frost but when i woke up it had- can i save my chillies and tomatoes still or are the goners? :(
HELP!!!
You'll soon be able to tell.. if the frost has got them the leaves droop and shrivel almost straight away. The fruit tends to rot from the inside out, which is harder to spot. If they still look ok this afternoon it's worth laying some fleece over them.
No frosts hear in N. London. ;D ;D ;D
Non here either in the east midlands. It was very chilly last night though
thanks, barn owl.
so is it worth picking my fruits now and having them green or are they already ruined?
Blimey I thought it was cold last night it must have dropped to 12c. Oh well better wrap up the barby for a couple of months.
Had frost here last night, had to scrape my windows this am (Edinburgh, Scotland) - got fleese over the tomatilos but dont think im gona get much from these as the fruit was late in starting to set
Rosie,
Are they out or in?
Frost on my car 2.15 when i left work this morning.
Light frost here this a.m. Very early in the year for down here on the Costa Geriatrica!
telboy- they were out for the first frost but are now in the kitchen!
Had first frost this morning and i have as yet not cleared stuff from the allotment EAK
It hit 3 degrees at midnight and much have dropped much lower then the 1 degree it was at 8am.
I am going back to bed to warm up as its only 4 degrees outside now.
1) Idiot hubbie switched off heating so house was very cold this morning
2) though doctors appointment was 8.20 but no it was 8.45 and they did not open the door will 8.30 so i stood in 1 degree for over 10 min :(
Going to the lotty mid afternoon to carry on clearing, digging beds and moving wood chips etc
Cambourne7
That will teach me. Usually I put the car in the garage but as I knew I was taking Joshua to school this morning I left the car out (laziness) It took 2 applications of deicer to clear the screen. It is now a beautiful sunny day, a little chilly.
Still had frost on the car and back lawn at 9 this morning!
:o
are my chillies gonna die ???
Don't despair - last year these chillies (poinsettia) were ok despite all the leaves shrivelling and falling off.
wow. those look brilliant! i'm a bit of a chilli head, where did u get the seeds/ plant?
did that get frosted?
The frost is what made all the leaves drop off and die. Below is how they looked before.
They're very hot but I think particularly good looking when ripe. Need early propagating or a better summer than this year's - they haven't turned red yet.
Had frost at the allotments, but none at home yet a couple of miles away!
I've just spent this afternoon clearing away limp pumpkin and courgette foliage, and bringing the final harvest under cover......the beds are now reasonably weed free but look so empty now..but only until my garlic and onions go in! ;D
My outdoor chillies look surprisingly OK, leaves still intact, the shed must give them a bit of shelter.
I cleared my peppers from the lottie last week in case of frost, as the ones nearest the door had started to rot (assume the cold got to them). Frost yesterday and today here. Not sure how my sweetpotatoes will have fared, but suspect I need to try and dig them up on Sunday :'(
Frost on the windscreen this morning. :o ;D ;D ;D
