Post by: Garden Manager on October 16, 2007, 18:27:29
Below is my entry for Photo of the Month for September.

I urge all those who are bemused or baffled by the new look competition board to post their photos here instead.

Lets get BACK TO BASICS folks

These photos are my favorite photos taken in September 2007

Richard, whilst I appreciate where you are coming from (the simplicity of the original competition was appealing) You must surely see that it is futile to enter your competition shots here because there will be no vote?  Perhaps this thread could indeed just be for people's favourite pictures taken during September?  :)

BTW I love the second pic!

I just wonder why you are trying to cause upset and disharmony on the site when you haven't given the new system a chance  :(

Sorry. I am afraid with regard to the photo competition the phrase 'If it aint broke dont fix it' springs to mind. I just feel the changes are unnesesary. By all means have a second moderator to run it but that IMO is all that was needed.

I dont mean to disrupt anyones harmony. I am just trying to make a point.

Take a look here:http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=43 (http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=43)   for an example of a forum based photo competition that ins simple but works very well. One thread for the competition , one thread to vote. Easy. ;D

As I understood it, Dan asked for a voluteer to organise the photo competition and as far as I could see, Kenkew was the only one to offer to take it on (I didn't read the whole of the thread so sorry if someone else did too).  He offered to take it on if he could make a few changes, and I think that is only fair given that he is giving up his time to maintain it.  I for one am happy that Ken has taken it on and think that the new format will be interesting and will work :-)  can't wait to enter a few photo's of my own in fact.

If you didn't like his ideas, why didn't you volunteer to be the moderator and keep it as you like it?

As I stated elsewhere I was away from the forum at the time and only found out about it yesterday. So I didnt get the chance to volunteer. I did make some suggestions in another thread as to alternative categories, as yet noone has commented on them.

Gosh Garden apprentice what an interesting looking structure  :o ! Was this for a fancy dress or themed party you were having? Looks like it needs a sultan or a harem of girls to sit there!!  ;D

OK, I didn't know that, so I guess you have a right to express your opinion. I guess if the new format doesn't work then people will express this and you never know it might get changed back.

Yes, GW, fair point, one I also noticed and changed within the new format.

The request now is for photographs taken within the last month, no actual month mentioned.

The 'Theme' section, when it gets underway will have no time limit at all so  people with brill shots in their archives can dust 'em off and show them.
Ken.

Er No, Nothing to do with me actualy. It happens to be a show garden at a flower show i viisted back at the begining of september. It was best in show as I recall.

The other photo is my garden. My favorite veiw of it.

Going back 'on topic'. I will stress again that whilst I had no intention of upsetting or antagonising anyone by my comments, I did like the old competition and am not sure if the new look one will work in it s current format.

I'm sure no-one's upset at you pointing out your concern's GA. You have every right to voice your opinion, in fact I appreciate it. Concerns voiced so far are very few but they will make me try all the harder to put together a winning formula.

Any change to a known and recognised structure is a gamble and doesn't always succeed and being in the firing line isn't a pleasant experience, but it goes with the job. I'm keeping my sword sharp just in-case, hate to fall on a rusty blade!

Some suggestions have been put forward and every-one has been noted and will certainly be considered. Some of those suggestions have in fact already been acted upon. It's going to take a little while to iron out every bump along the way, but I'm sure I'll quickly get the message where somethings not quite right.... :)
All I can say at the moment is, have patience, there is a little improved structuring in the pipe-line.
Thanks, Ken.

My apologies GA, I hadn't read the title of the photo above it and had asumed it was your garden, that explains the reason for having such an amazing gazebo in a garden!!!  ;D

I wondered why your entries had stopped!

We were always a month behind, as the competition used to be for photos taken during the previous month - I had never thought of it as being behind, but see what you mean.

Some great entries this time for the new competition, should have a competitive competition this month for both categories, but I'm sure a photo (or two) from you would be appreciated!

Dan

Yes the time delay with the old competition could be a bit of a bind sometimes. Often I would have a great photo that i wanted to enter, but had to wait for the next months comp (and probably have nothing to enter for the month in question).

I appreciate why it was done, to give people a full month to take their entry photo, rather than rushing to take one for the current month.
