Title: Hypericum Calcinum - "Rose of Sharon"
Post by: Learner Gardener on October 12, 2007, 21:39:18
I read that this is cut back annually to ground level.

When do I do it ?

Mine hasn't been done for some years and it is getting scruffy.

Many thanks

Prune in early spring, to tidy it up and cut back to  3" from the base every 3 years.

Where do you grow yours? I have mine growing in a shady spot under trees and found it got rust disease quite badly and did not flower. I have recently not only moved it to a more open spot in the same area of the garden, but have also divided it in an attempt to rejuvinate it.

I guess that although its related to shrubs and is evergreen, its best treated like a herbaceous perennial and cut back. As for the best time to do it i am not sure but I guess that a good time would be when you see new growth appearing at the base in the spring.

Hope this helps.
