This we we was wondering about celery, how has your been this year, our is rather thinner and smaller than we would have liked, but more tasty than last years, what has yours been like? is it the weather ? or just a funny year, we think we wattered them more than last as well. whats yours doing>?

We used to sell to the WI, but that was in the olden days, to help with the school fees!!
Ours have a lot of foliage, I think I was a bit slack in the earthing up of them, we shall see. Got nine plants, which should do us OK.
not bad at all but it goes limp very quickly.
I usually grow at home and it does well in my raised beds. At the lottie this year it's been ok, I tried Golden Self Blanching which has produced a fair number of decent sized sticks. I was suprised the slugs have left well alone, the organic ferramol pellets seem to have worked well!!
The golden self blanching was a bit of a disaster this year - got some sort of blight. The Granada F1 was a bit more resilient but not a great crop. Think it may have been because I put a couple of tomato plants in the same bed that got our weird slow motion version of blight.
Tim, I just cut it up and pop it in the freezer so that I always have some available to put under roasts, or for making stocks and soup.
Planted 6 celery plants in the dreaded black flower pots then put a piece of 6" drain pipe in for the plants to grow up. The celery was nice and white, a bit leggy and tasty. Due to a shortage of space in the garden i will try it again next year as the pots can go in any odd corner.
P.S. One plant per pot.
My self blanching has made huge, fat plants. My first time planting them But some of th outer leaves are a bit tough/woody. I will try and take a photo this week-end and post for you all to drool over :-[ :-[

Celery soup recipe?
OK I use a celery, about 2 cups chopped finely. and a spud if you like spuds in celery soup, but personally i prefer the pure celery flavour.
A big onion, diced and sweated in butter or oil. Then I add the celery and cook it till it softens a little (5 mins). Add a small tablespoon of flour, salt pepper and cook that into a roux.
Stir stir stir and add a litre of mixed milk and chicken stock (i use cubes, no worries there mate) and increase heat till hot but not boiling. Then simmer gently, about 25 minutes is usually enough, stirring a lot. Don't put a lid on or it will boil over! If it looks a bit thick, a bit more stock.
Puree it with the old hand-held blender, like for baby food ;D
I love celery soup, it is dead easy to make too.
