Title: discovering new plants
Post by: tig on June 27, 2004, 21:09:42
was wondering what people do when they come across a new type of plant , maybe in their garden or in the wild , a type not previously known , or just a different varity, how would you go about getting it checked etc. and have you any stories yourselves
of having done something similar ??? :)

I ask Palustrus  ;D  Which reminds me, I have a mystery plant in the garden now, must take a piccy now it is flowering to see if anyone can solve the mystery.

Seriously though, I dig out my encyclopedia and graze until I find a likely suspect, then search on the web, ask clever peeps, and get there eventually.

thanks ej but was thinking about how some people
get to name plants with whatever name they decide upon when they discover a new type of plant
suppose i should be looking towards how breeders
do this mmmmm think ill look in that direction
(oh just curious by the way ur not going to see a new rose called tig on the shelves next year ;D )

Hi Tim,

There are lots of rules and regulations when it comes to the naming of plants. In one of my (less entertaining) journeys on the web I stumbled accross the "International Code of Botanical Nomenclature". You can find an online version following this link
http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/iapt/nomenclature/code/SaintLouis/0118IndexScfNames.htm (http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/iapt/nomenclature/code/SaintLouis/0118IndexScfNames.htm)
Best have a tray of guinnes ready if you want to digest this official document.  :-\
Somewhat less daunting but still boring reading is a publicatiopn by the RHS on the naming of plants and the rules of the game.   ???
http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/qnome.asp (http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/qnome.asp)

I think the enjoyment of amateur gardening stops at the doorstep of these official procedures.
