(or anyone else who knows their Spanish onions ;D)
I'm off to Barcelona tomorrow for a few days & have had a request - to bring back some saffron if it's cheaper there than here.....
1st question....is it cheaper?
2nd question....what's it called in Spanish, please?
Many thanks if you can reply to this before take-off tomorrow...'bout 10.30am.
'Lishka
Just trying to contact a friend. Will get back if I do.
:-* Ken
He say's it's called Azafran and he reckons it's not cheap, even in Spain. He doesn't know the price so I suppose it's a case of shopping around a bit.
Now that's what I call a result 8)
Very many thanks indeed Ken :)
It will be cheaper in Spain than here - I always buy lots when I go to Italy, and get my friends to bring it when they come over. They always say how expensive it is, but they are only comparing their prices, which are always cheaper than ours.
Alishka - don't forget to go to the market - the Boqueria, just off the Ramblas.
Biscombe sent me a packet in a seed swap earlier this year and although I can't remember the price printed on the label, it was very cheap in comparison to what we have to pay here.
My packet from Azafran Natural S.L. is 0.5 g of natural azafran. It is packed in a triangular plastic container fixed to a yellow card with the words "AZAFRAN en hebras" across the middle.
I would have thought Biscombe would have replied, she must be working away.
Have a great time in Barcelona - take lots of photos and tell us all about that lovely city when you come back.
Tricia
Thanks again peeps - all details now in my little book 8)
'bean I certainly intend to check out the markets! 8 of us have rented a 5-bed appt. just off the Ramblas, so no excuse to not... ;)
Me jealous!
There is a good market on the right hand side of the Ramblas, as you walk towards the sea, and another on the left as you look at the Cathedral, and from my experience Saffron is definitely cheaper.
We have just returned, and forgot to buy our normal pack of cards size pack!
Have fun.
Dan
Awwwwww! missed the post!!
Info is correct! have a great time, I love Barca xxxxx
Forgot to say - BCN is the pickpocket capital of Europe. I went in June to a Catalan wedding and had my wallet taken from my bag - and I'm streetwise!
Very true! Mate of mine live there and shes have her bag stolen 3 or 4 times :(
What? The same bag?
Heheheehhehe!!
we found tunisia quite cheap for safron as well so if you know anyone going that way ;)
It's getting more expensive here, but a hell of a lot cheaper than elsewhere. If anyone needs some let me know, we could work something out.
Hola Peeps!
Oh dear me :-[.....might well, just very well, take you up on your offer Biscombe :-*.....1st day walked through the market just off the Ramblas? Saw some there (handy hint = it had a pic of a crocus on the box) ;D, but wanted to shop around when I had more time yesterday, our last day.....FATAL !!! Shopping sortov took over yesterday - lots of clothes & handbags in sight but nary a glimpse of a cauliflower :P All's not lost tho for my friend....friend of a friend's going to N. Africa in Nov...
Market off the Ramblas? I have never ever seen so many varieties of mushrooms & chorizos and olives? OOOOH! Return visit asap -( & btw.....the architecture & museums worth a proper looking-at anorl) 8)
It's fab isnt it!! Send me your addy, I'll send you some! can't blame you for buying handbags n stuf!!!
million blessings Bis :-*...I do feel so guilty and my long email to my friend this morning seemed, even to me, a bit lame :-[ (but then I stroked my new handbag and started to feel better) ;D
I'll introduce my veggie-growing/foodie friend here & praps you could take it from there? I could help her with "sorting something out" if necessary - many many thanks 8)
why not buy in some bulbs - crocus sativus - and have a yearly supply and be the envy of of your friends ;D
Calendula, you need to grow masses!!!!!!
nah, a few stamens go a long way and a big pot of bulbs goes even further - how much saffron does one want to use - nicer to go on a trip to Morocco though ;D
Bis, I've given your offer some thought and I've PM'd you...fact is, guilt at handbag shopping rather than sourcing azafran's spoiling my enjoyment of my purchases ::)
I'd always thought that one needed to grow masses of crocuses too to farm a small yield....you saying this is an Urban Myth, C, to make us all pay OTT prices rather than growing our own and bankrupting the importers? :o ;D
just ask yourself how much saffron you use in a year - best to say "lots" to justify the trips abroad ;D
a few strands in any recipe is usually more than enough
Believe me Calendula I've seen it growing here in Spain you would need to grow loads for a paella for two!! one one strand per flower!
Lish got your PM I'll send you some on friday........

You're a doll :-* Must stress this isn't for me but for a friend...therefore you're a line of dolls along the lines of those we used to create by folding paper into a concertina shape? 8)
thanks for the link KK - note the weight quantities mentioned - a kilo of strands requires a huge field - no one person would get through a kilo of strands (each strand weighing next to nothing)
anyway I disagree Biscombe - my pots of bulbs do me fine (when they flower) even though I would prefer to travel far to get it ;D
Whatever!! ;)
