Title: onion sets advice for a first timer?
Post by: pjb on October 07, 2007, 18:48:20
I'm going to plant my onion sets in the next week-ish any tips/advice? I was told to make the ground very firm is this right? I've got red, white and yellow to go in. Thanks.

firm yes but with enough 'give' to nicely plant the sets with the tops just showing (they need to be firm to make it harder for the birds to pick out and for abject weather to dislodge  - I planted mine last week

Yes, and just leave the tips showing. Also keep checking them as they make get pulled out by birds!

I don't know what the birds think the onions are, perhaps green worms? I had to replant several today that were laying on top of the soil  ???
