Title: What can i plant now???
Post by: Norfolk n Proud on October 06, 2007, 12:27:45
Hi and good morning everyone,  please forgive my ignorance, but what can i plant now to grow through the winter? My Savoy cabbages have been decimated by caterpillars and i don't like sprouts or parsnips, but i have 12 raised beds that are looking really quite bare at the min! This  is my first autumn / winter on the lottie, and i don't know what to do.  :)

green manure to keep the soil friable and nurtured
oriental salads such as mizuna, mustards
radishes such as mooli can still be sown
spring cabbages should be planted out now
over winter onions for planting out now
buy in fruit bushes/trees/plants to plant out (must have room for fruit)
garlic

just a few starter ideas  :)

And good morning to you!

Much about Autumn planting elsewhere - meanwhile, by 'planting', do you also mean sowing?

Would you buy in plants or sets? Garlic, Brassica, Onions?

Carrots, Chinese veg etc?

Written before that one!!

Thanks for replying Tim and Calendula, yes i do also mean sowing, I'll look out for some green manure and, I've just got back from buying some Germidour Garlic bulbs,Senshyu white onion sets, and Electric red onion sets, along with some winter cabbage plug plants and PSB. Hows that for starters? As for fruit bushes, moles seeds will supply 50 Glen Ample raspberry canes for £37 approx, i like the idea of loads more rasps  :)
