facebook is like a social site where people can connect, to find the group if you need to go to groups and just search for allotments4all or click the clink in my post and it should add you.

Not my thing, but I have noticed that other forums I post on are getting less and less posters as they all go off and do their bit on these new sites. If I was a moderator I would be deleting all threads that encourages my users to go elsewhere.

They can run side by side but, time is the issue and the time is shared thinner and thinner.

bit like yer hair then, really... ::)

Thanks for the invite Cam, but no thanks.

I read on another forum ages ago...can't remember all the details, but...something about security levels & what's done with the info you submit?

Facebook, etc...suits some, doesn't suit me :-\

I joined FB last November (and the A4A appreciation society). I have found it fantastic to keep in touch with family and friends who are spread around the world.  Two of my step grandchildren are on a world tour at the moment, it is so convenient for them to post their photos on one page rather than having to send post cards to all and sundry.  Of my 35 "friends" 11 are family and 13 are not in this country.

A lot of people are sniffy about social networking sites, perhaps because they often get a bad press, and obviously there are drawbacks, but on the whole I find it so much easier than faffing around with emails, and can tell at a glance who's doing what. It's not necessary to read every single entry (particularly with the younger generation who write in text-speak) - just the same as on here, where we all have a common interest - allotments and growing things - I don't read the wildlife, competition and kept animals boards.

I'm in charge of IT (for my sins) of our local stroke club, and more and more members are asking for help in joining FB - so they can keep in touch with their friends and family the other side of the world. They are going for that rather than email.  Like it or not, it's the future.

I agree. It's great for keeping in touch with family and friends living abroad or far afield and for linking in to people with common interests. My son has been posting some great photos from Cambodia, where he's living at the moment. However, it's not much good for sharing tips, ideas and technical information, like Allotments4All is. And it's very tempting to spend far too much time on Facebook, busy doing nothing.

Sorry cam :-[.....after reading the comments here (& fully aware that my reply is going to bump this to the top :-\) I've gotta agree with ACE that this isn't the place to blatantly advertise something which is in direct coflict with Dan's site, (and potential income)here....

Wish you'd thought this through a bit deeper & posted your Facebook link under a general post of yours....there again, hindsight is great, init? Took ACE's post to spell it out to me...

Sorry, but I hope that this post (no thanks to me, then :-[) slips right off this first page as a topic heading :-[

Thats crazy. Its just another means of communicating with each other. If A4A continues to support its members then its business as usual.

I use both and dont see the conflict. Are you saying if you found a better site you would leave here ? the internet is a big place and this is a great site. TeeGee (thankfully) is always quoting from his site with links. I might also add it is very good of him to put such an archive together.

Think of it as advertising for Dan. The bigger the group the more people will see it. I have had 2 friends who saw my FB page and joined here just from the group listing.

Peace. F.

If you have a good website I can't see the problem with discussing something like Facebook.  It is on the television in the newspapers so don't think anyone mentioning it on A4A is going to decline posters to here or anywhere else come to that.

Kenkew even started a topic 'Interesting Web sites', OllieC with 'Anyone twitter he.

I'm with you Flunky.

I also think Facebook is brilliant for keeping in touch with friends and family.

Title: Re: Facebook

I completely disagree, there is no reason why a general social networking site would take people away from here.  This is by far the best allotment/gardening forum there is, and I lurked on most of them before joining this one.  I wouldn't expect any of my extended family or friends to join this forum (my sons did) because their eyes glaze over when we mention allotments and growing stuff.

Every link that's posted on here - and there are probably at least a dozen each day - takes a person away from the site, that's the whole point of the web.  People are more likely to be driven away by adverse and unhelpful posts like we've had in the past.

I did find a very dear friend on Facebook - or rather her daughter found me through a friend of a friend.  My friend had moved to Spain at the same time that I returned from Italy and we had completely lost touch.  I had been trying to find her, and she'd been trying to find me.

And who's to say that the time spent on FB is wasted - any more than the time spent on here, or doing crosswords in the newspaper or reading crap magazines or watching crap TV.

its not fair or accurate to say FB is in direct conflict with A4A,the sites are completely different and i use them for completely different things!!
as an aside,i found my two sisters in america thru FB,and my dad is so happy to be reunited with them.
A4A has given me many many brilliant things and i wont be stopping using it!

Hey, I'm not saying facebook is not welcome, it must be really good for all you folk keeping in touch. I am only saying what has happened on other sites I have been on. Posters come on less and less, just like Cambourne for example, she used to be on every day but has only posted once this month and that is to drum up support for facebook.

As some people say they have plenty of time to get on line no matter what the site perhaps it will not affect us.

I still do not think it is bad manners to tout for another site. Links are different they are usually sources of information.

I joined FB sometime ago. Was completely bored with it within a week, not been back since.

Also dont like the idea of information gathering/ being monitored. Always remember, anything as popular as FB will not be given away free.  :o

I am one of the folks who like Facebook in order to keep in touch with rellys.  I have just finished a half hour chat with Niece No. 2  arranging the weekend with her.  Now that is handy.  But, as you see I am back in here so there is room for all the different sites we visit during the course of an evening.

I speak to Tokyo every week on Skype.   :) :) :)  and often to Belgium, Canada and Italy - all at the same time.

In fact - do you remember the predecessor of Skype - ICQ???  I used that on dial-up in Italy off my laptop, carrying on a three way conversation with my sons in England and my friends in Oz.  And we thought that was brilliant!!!!  How things change in 10 years.

I speak to my friends in Canada a couple of times a week on Skype too,  have done for a couple of years now.

Skype's been around for quite a while now.

Another fan of Facebook and Skype here. Each has its own uses and in this day and age of technology and ever increasing ways of communication I'm happy to embrace them all. If it helps us to keep in touch then so much the better. It's a big enough world for all of them.

Another Facebook fan here.  I am a member of several forums, posting less on this one after a couple of 'incidents' but I still browse and pick up good tips, especially Tims recipes  :P .  I chat to some a4a members on facebook who I have become friends with, and yup, like others, I can chat to my family in oz, a mate who has been travelling.  I loves it!   ;D

I might be repeating something already said, but as I recall, Cam started the A4all appreciation site when a4all had problems with hackers cocking things up and the site was up and down a lot over a period of weeks.  She wanted somewhere where people could pop and say, oi, whats going on or whatever, I don't believe for one minute she was trying to drag peeps away for A4all.  As for her not posting much, well, tis spring and I think historically on lots of sites, people have been busier in spring and not getting online as much, lots of seed sowing to be doing.

EJ,a coupla things here from a non Facebook contributor nor even a Poster of Pics here to use the 'click' link for pics, tho I DO surreptitiously slip him some £££s via a friend 8)...

I tale your point completely (and thanks Cam 8)) for setting up the site on The Book when Lotties had probs back in 2007..

Dan himself ran into financial probs when this site became more popular and bigger, and then asked for a £10 contibution towards ease of posting direct to here to offset his costs of  keeping the site viable. I don't post pics but lob in a bit, see above...and why? Cos Dan & Lotties is Worth It and I appreciate all that I find here - long may it continue.

It's great that the two co-exist and have co-existed since 2007!

BUT, when ACE read this post a coupla days ago he hadn't realized it was so old...(neither had I).....but that it had been 'bumped' by someone else....and so he responded (as did I)  to a new post.....

And there's the confusion.

IF it seems that you Happy Snappers don't detract from Dan's essential income ( and it seems that it doesn't) no probs.....

Nevertheless......even tho it's an old post resurrected, I still don't think it's on to have it so prominently displayed, if it might, just might, mean that Ower Dan might be a loser...

Do-As-You-Would-Be-done-By maxim springs to mind.
