Title: Harvesting in the dark
Post by: cornykev on October 02, 2007, 20:05:48
Picked some sweetcorn, runners, carrots, cauli, savoy cabbage and a large courgette this evening and by the time I picked the runners it was pitch dark. When I arrived over there the leaves from the trees in the park were scattered on the lottie, one thinks Autumn is well and truly here.  ;D ;D ;D

Me too!  Igloo caulis, a couple of courgettes, six leeks, a handful of carrots, and the first of my kale! Need to remember to take the torch  ::)

Quite depressing now it's so dark in the evenings.
I know, I know it happens every year, but it seems to darken so quickly compared to in the summer evenings.  :(

It's the dark mornings i don't like - way too depressing getting out of a lovely warm bed to a dark, cold morning  :(

Not tried this harvesting by moonlight malarky, will have to give it a go (if we've got anything to harvest that is...)  ;D

I've harvested slugs in the dark before!

How was your sweet corn is it still ripening, mine went in a bit late due to slugs eating my homegrown seedlings i planted some bought plants. I have nice looking cobs but they're still pale I don't know if they're going to make it in time.

I was going to say I've hoed in the dark before, but it sounds too dodgy...!

What I meant to say was I've weeded in the dark before (that also sounds a bit suspect!), its supposed to be as effective as bright sunlight as the weeds don't get any light for hours so can't re establish?

Kea I went down the lottie yesterday and picked the last of the sweetcorn and dug up all plants, then I found a note from the resident rats thanking me for the sweetcorn and could they have more of the same next year.  :'(   ;D ;D ;D

I know exactly what Debster means. It can get very depressing not seeing daylight.  :(
When I worked full time I would try and spend as much time as possible of my lunch break (all 30 minutes of it), rain or shine, outside.

It can't be long before the rats eat mine then....probably to get me back for putting wire mesh on the bottom of their former winter *residence! (my *dalek compost bins)

Every time I read the title of this thread, I find myself humming "Whistling in the Dark" by They Might Be Giants. A classic. "I'm having a wonderful time but I'd rather be whistling in the dark" etc.. Just thought I should share that.
