Returning home on train yesterday with my son and brother and his lad, train was busy so i sat side of this lad in his mid 20's who was with 2 girls. He asked where i'd been and as soon as he heard my accent started making snide comments about Barnsley no probs its usually a bit of fun. Then he starts spouting on about how us lot are weak because we've let paki's and niggers in and telling me his a BNP member. I tell him to shut his mouth and i'd rather not speak to him, the girls he was with also told him. He shut up aand i left the train not saying anything. I'm not the violent type but i've been thinking all day if my son would'nt have been there i think i'd have hit him.
Trains? mobile chit-chat & worse. Sympathies.
14 year old almost grandchild had her arm stroked the other day. What to do? Ignore, knee him or shriek take your ** hands off me??
sad that you had to have that sort of experience, northener..I do think people like this are fewer than when I was a kid..but not few enough !!

I had a similar experience when I was young, it's frightening, knowing how to re-act
, my mum told me, take his hand, hold it up and say, loudly
"Who's dirty little hand is this? "
Oh, I like that one. Must tell her!
..many years ago i was on a school trip in france, we went swimming in communal changing rooms. While i was getting changed (the little rooms you got changed in where accessed by a door on either side one side opened to the pool they were about 4ft by 4ft) i had been in the little room a few min struggeling to untie a double knot on some steeltoe boots i was wearing (bad fashion statement) and was still fully dressed when 3 men forced there way into the changing cubicle. You can imagine what they had on there mind as they were obviously expecting someone to be in there.
Either way i managed to fight them off and believe me they came off worse and as well as some injuries (one needed to have an operation to repair a crushed laryx, one needed to have his kneecap replaced and the other had one of his vegtables burst and is now replaced with a plastic replica ;D) they also got 7 years in a french prison for this and other offences. (I was a very angry person back then)
I fought back, I tell you this to explain that i know how to handle myself if push comes to shove. That said i have had my bottom pinched on trains and its easier to ignore them. Same with idiots who open there mouths and spout rubish!! When there older and there brain sells have reached double digits they will realise what complete idiots they are themselves.
I found that knowing my own abilitys and being aware of my suroundings a way of staying calm and in control in situations that can be challanging. Tim i would stongly suggest that you get your grandaughter to some self defence classes something like Akido which teaches you to take control and use people strenth and anger against them and it keeps you fit. Personaly i beleive that self defence should be part of the school ciriculum so that everyone knows how to look after themselves and i made aware of there capabilitys.
Sorry but anyone in the BNP deserves to be spat on! >:( scary stuff, poor you to have the misfortune to sit next to this nutter
...if the bnp got into power i would be kicked out of the country!!

Whoa! :o I was thinking of picking a fight with you but now I think I'll just leave it!! (;D Just Kidding!)
It's awful that people have to defend themselves like this and that you were attacked in this way. At least you (no pun intended) came out fighting.
I would have wanted to punch the guy on the train too. Particularly if he was going on that way in front of impressionable children. Mind you, at 20 and carrying on in the way that he did he's proved that he's just an overgrown child himself.
Good on you for keeping your calm - otherwise we all know that
you are the one who would have come off worst by being arrested for assault.
When i told my 12 year old son what had happened[he was a couple of seats away]he could'nt believe it and calmly said you should have hit him dad. Next time i'm travelling by train Cambourne i'll give you a ring. Seriously thats horrible for you.
hehe
Part of it was luck and part was the tight space, the crushed larynx was me wanting to hit him missing his face and hitting his neck, the knee repair was thanks to the shoes which he kind of ran into and the other injury was again the shoes and me kicking out.
I told the teacher what happened she explained it to the police and i was never spoken to again.
Teacher told my parents and they signed me up for Akido lessons to help with my anger thats why up till recently i had a sword in the house but i dont have a licence any more so its gone and i just have my wooden practice sword and when my back is better i intend on signing up for Kendo classes as i just love practising with sword and other weapons. One is called a Jo which essentialy is a broomstick. And i always have one on my allotment :)
My wooden sword is 2-300 hundrend years old, made from a single peace of cherry and was given to me in exhange for a set of books and i am still trying to replace the books.
If anyone sees the books they are the writings of Miyamoto Musashi (sword saint and if anyone watches heros on TV hes the original owner of heros sword)
His writings form a 6 books collection which were dicontinued in mid 1970s and were translated by Eiji Yoshikawa if you see any of the books please let me know.
Northener that is despicable. What a vile thing to have happened, but had you walloped him you'd probably have been the one to be charged should the police have been involved. You did the right thing, and I bet your son learned a valuable lesson on that journey.
Cam, I'm in awe!!!, again a scarey experience. You must have had your wits about you. Hope the back is better soon.
Northerner, Emaggie is right - if you'd laid a finger on this person you would have been the one in trouble, you did the right thing to walk away - all he wanted was a reaction but you didn't give it to him.
Paula (a fellow Northerner, not far from Barnsley!) xx
Crikey Cam! What a tough lass you are!! well done for fighting those scum off! You are right about keeping calm of course, but sometimes it is very hard especially experiencing racist behavior. Good idea about self defence classes.
From an expat Barnsley lass!!!
Cam I did aikido for about a year only gave it up when i had a wrist lock put on me by a complete a!!!!!!!e who refused to let me go no matter how many times I tapped for him to do so. I did always prefer judo and did that for years, then moved on to rugby which i played until about 4 years ago, now with all the drumming i do i am still pretty strong in my upper body. but i totally agree self defence is an important thing for people to learn and with karate, aikido judo etc they all teach you respect and discipline which would do a lot of our youths the world of good, one of the tattooists that did/does work in plymouth Doc, he used to be a 1st or 2nd Dan in Kendo and if you watched him and his friends the sword control they had was incredible it really looked as though they were gonna inflict some harm but stopped just short of it amazing
Cam - you are far cooler than I ever imagined. :) Good on ya.
Everyone knows my views on the far right (well - any of the right for that matter) so I ain't going to get myself into trouble by going into them here because I find it hard to hold back. Apart from, next time you go on the train northerner - see if you can borrow Cam's steelies first.
Hubby and I had a similar experience coming back on the train from the Oval this year. A young mouthy youth displaying a racist T-shirt on the train, resulted in another older guy saying to us at the door as we were getting off that he would sort him out. We were outside the station waiting for our son to pick us up and they "kicked off". We didn't think twice about it and just stood in between the pair of them saying it wasn't worth it and just talked to them individually. We hope they went their separate ways but, boy, did our son have a go at us - said they might have been carrying knives and the like. OK we didn't even think about that at the time, but sometimes, and no apologies for the phrase, "it's good to talk".
I would only have stepped in if the rascist was winning. And then it would have been to help the other guy.
As I said Redclanger - we spoke to them both! No preference either way - just didn't want to see two youngsters hurting each other or being carted off which may have resulted in a criminal record for the both of them.
gosh thanks guys but honest i am not that angry person anymore and i was lucky it could quite easly have gone bad for me.
I loved Akido as all the power came not from physical strenth but your hips
(As you can see from the founder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exuO3Eb6TjY)
Given my back problems this is what appealed to me.
I do want to get back to it but the local club teaches a different style and i dont get on with it, i love my wooded sword and i would much rather concentrate on using this better. Although i have not touched it in a couple of years to practice i do want to set up a target on my plot (old tyre on a mount stuff all in garage to be made) and i have an approprate place i can practice in. Once a year i do get my sword and Jo out and some walnut oil and rub them both down with the oil and check for nicks and damage and then put them away again.
Due to being a 1% biker as long as I remember I do not suffer from big mouthed people.
But I did hear a great reply a few years ago, which I am still looking forward to using.
An old bloke was getting some stick from a group of youths, so he asked one of them if his face bled every 28 days.
At least our youngest g/children - all male - are well up in Tai Quando.
ace- i dont get it?
whats this about their face bleeding? sorry am i being really thick? :-[
ha ha oh dear Rosie you must be very elegant to not get the joke! Don't worry about it, love it I told you know, you'd probably die of shock ;D ;D ;D
I think perhaps he was comparing his face to a certain female anatomical feature ha ha ha
Cambourne's comments make me miss my old Doc Martens. you can't beat steel caps.
I don't know which is the funniest, Aces comment or Rosie not getting it, did make me laugh though, Cam any piccies of you and your sword in action. :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D
nope no pics :) sorry
