At last! This is the first ripe fruit. I brought it indoors to finish off the ripening process. The 'sliced' pic doesn't really show the true colour of the flesh - a bright orangey-red. And neither pic shows the delicious flavour.
Pleased? Me? Nah, no big deal.
YIPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
;D
Amazing, Amazin... well done, ;D
wow, well done!
u have a right to be pleased! looks gorgeous- bet it was delish ;D
righyt, I'm really jealous now, we have 5 plants nw, lots of leaves, no bloomin fruit ;D
hope it tasted as good as it looks, looking forward to next year ;D
Are they self pollinating?
Well done! I'm very impressed. How did you grow them? Do they need a green house?
WOW that's very impressive. Well done. ;D

flippin heck, well done. Hope you enjoyed it :D
They look brilliant! Do you reckon they'd be any good for jam? ;D
You're more than welcome to try Jenny - if I can get the rest to ripen!
They were germinated indoors then put out in Morrison's black buckets and basically left under the hedge to get on with it. Although I'd already grown a Passiflora Caerulea which was of the rampant thug persuasion, I thought this might be a little more tender - not a bit of it! It has withstood gales, rain, drought, and is busy twining itself round anything that stands still long enough... which reminds me - where's the cat?...
They must be self pollinating as I don't know of another one nearby - I have two others, but they didn't flower this year.
There'll be plenty of seeds on offer as soon as I can find a way of distracting it while I pick the fruit - and cuttings shouldn't be a problem. I'll keep you posted.
Thank all for your good wishes - I'm absolutely floating.
You grow them outside?! That's even more impressive. You should be proud! 8)
I have a edulis plant grown from a pip (it's in a pot in my garden) but it hasn't flowered. I'd love to try growing banana passionfruit from seed or cutting. :)
Tora, I have an Edulis as well, and an Alata, but they're both still very young. I think if they even flower next year, I'll be thrilled. I'll make sure you get some seeds, no probs. In the meantime good luck with the Edulis - fingers crossed for next year!
;D
awesome stuff! Is that P. molissima or P. mixta? I grew mixta for years with no flowering before I got bored with it.
Thank you, Amazin! :-* ;D
err can i ask what the heck that is? It looks suspiciously like a fruit that is growing rampantly all over the fence on our allotment site!! Does it give passionfruit type flowers??? The fruit here is about the size of a large egg, and a peachy-yellowish colour. I didn't dare pick or eat any as i didn't know what it was...
Yours sounds like Passiflora Caerulea - it has large white waxy flowers with purple centres and produces roundish fruit which start green and progress to bright orange. Edible, but not up to much.
The flowers of the Banana Passionfruit are large and bright pink. Here's a link to the pics I posted of the flowers on mine:

Sorry, tai haku, I didn't spot your message there. They're very close aren't they, Mixta and Molissima, but mine is definitely a Molissima, the flower petals are more slender and pointed. Both are beautiful though.

Couldn't tell you - I've know idea what mixta looks like in flower! >:( ;D
Interesting to see someone having success with a more exotic species though, I keep meaning to have another pop at P. quadrangularis - maybe next year....
Yup, that's on my list of retries next year too - now I've been inspired by this success!
;D
