am I too late to start the seeds off in trays?
I did this last week as I lost most of the stuff planted in August - too dry!! The onions grew well in the greenhouse and I transplanted them on the weekend so that they are now the same size as ones planted in August.
After this, as my Irish allotment neighbour says, they have two choices - they can die or grow.
Mine are going in situ next week so i would say you have plenty of time :)
My Radars and "Feng Shui"'s went in on Monday together with my English and French garlic saved from the biggest corms harvested earlier in the year, thanks to a man and his rotar. Fee = 1 bottle of red wine ;). It pays to make acquaintances up at the site!
I was interested in an old victorian garden episode on the gardening channel the other day where Geoff Hamilton planted 5 or 6 regular onion seeds in each cell on a tray then planted the cells out when they were about 5 inches high so the onions grew in a clump. They just pushed away from each other and grew like shallots. I'm trying that next year.
we did that with some this year, just meant we got bunches of small onions :)
we also did it with spring onions, some did well, some were eaten ;D
They had these (as described by brother sawfish) in the model allotment at Wisley - also with beetroot and something else but I can't remember what at the mo... I'm going to try it too.

I usually plant seeds in cells and plant them out but my spring onions are never very good. it,s never occured to me to start them off that way and plant them out in clumps. know what i,m trying next year thanks
