Title: Strawberries and garlic
Post by: davholla on September 25, 2007, 15:10:14
If I grow garlic near more strawberries will the slugs leave them alone ?  Can I grow garlic in the strawberry barrel ?

Has anyone tried this ?

there wouldn't be much room for garlic and the strawberries in a barrel and you'd think that being in a barrel should offer some protection against slugs  :(

also it is considered that garlic and strawberries do NOT make good companions - maybe grow some tansy nearby, strong smelling, great companion plant for strawbs as well as other fruit and veg and has a really nice yellow button flower in late summer

Being in a barrel does help a lot but not 100%.
How do you grow tansy ?

I read this too Calendula. I dug out the garlic which was along side the strawbs long before I read about it, but I obviously missed some and I have to report that I had a good crop of strawbs and some garlic too!
I have since got hold of some tansy and planted it though. (I like it anyhow) ;D
Also, davholla, the slugs still ate the strawbs ::) If you want to pm me with your address I'll send you a root-it's plentiful on our site.

Only nematodes I think for best effect.. Saddad told me about them but I can't remember which thread. Lots of sites if you google.

I got nematodes for my sister's birthday this year and she said they worked a treat - she only did one application in about April, but it kept them at bay until about a month ago.

I'm going to do an application in autumn - although if we're set for a freezing winter that will kill alot of them, so i might wait til spring.

Try the Wiggly Wigglers website:

I don't know if there are better deals out there - this seemed a good one.
