Title: Nigella
Post by: Doris_Pinks on September 24, 2007, 21:15:43
Is it just me that find her hugely irritating??? Obviously has gobloads of money cos of the recipes and places she shops (she even annoys my 15 year old!).........grrrrrrrrrrrrrr  but nice to see a chef that is curvy! ;D ;D  Makes me feel so MUCH better! ;)

OH and I were commenting on her programme tonight.

He said he could eat most of the dishes she cooked. but the problem was that she was very vague on ingredients, cooking times, etc.

I'm just amazed he could take his eyes off her tits and bum!!

No Doris_Pinks you are not alone.  I find her cringingly irritating.

I suppose it's the way she is being marketed, but the one word that describes her is 'very *friendly* person'.

Personally I think Nigella is a waste of space. I hate folk who try to bring sex into everything. A good steak needs no sauce! ;) And chocolate may rule but without foreplay.
I didn't have a lot of time for Dad, Nigel - chancellor of the exchequer - either.

Ha, I think you've been caught by the slightly neurotic swear-bot, valmarg. There is a work-around on here somewhere, or I think you can put a space in the middle of the word (I posted once about "a k n o b of butter" (without the gaps) - and it changed it to "a thingy of butter").

And yes, she will join Jamie when I am king.

I don't think I'll be watching any more of this series.  It's a shame to see an intelligent and attractive woman who still thinks she needs to be overtly flirty and tarty to be acceptable and I don't rate the recipes.   It's more a cse of buying expensive ingredients and just doing an assembly job.

I tried the chorizo and clams with chick peas and rocket thinking it would be good because I know bacon and clams work.  It was awful both as two separate dishes and as a combination.   The chorizo drowned out the clams' flavour would be better served with a simple green salad or vegetable.    I have a recipe for spicy chick peas with spinach that works much better.

Finally, her kind of food is not exactly planet friendly is it?  All that imported, unseasonal, ready washed stuff with masses of food miles and packaging carbon footprints, not to mention the average family budget being blown on just one of her meals.

Post by: sarah on September 25, 2007, 09:11:25
i stopped watching this so called cookery programme last week when she went to the (expensive) shops and just bought loads of (expensive) dishes and served them up on the table with much oooing and ahhhhing and licking of fingers. how easy was that!! no cooking at all in fact. she's like a puppet. very strange as i used to like her a lot.
Title: Re: Nigella
Post by: tim on September 25, 2007, 10:53:31
But, with that exception, people still watch her - & complain!!
Title: Re: Nigella
Post by: busy_lizzie on September 25, 2007, 11:14:45
She seems to have turned into a caricature of herself, unfortunately. I think she has been wrongly advised and she should have stuck to her original format. To just go out and buy lots of expensive deli stuff last week to put  out, made me laugh! That's a new one. ;D

My OH did try her chicken dish from last week and everybody said it was very tasty. But I think this is just not working. She is very likeable though and as DorisP says it is nice to see a curvy chef who enjoys their food. busy_lizzie

I can't stand the bint  >:(  Really seriously irritating in a terribly immature flirty way that grates worse than a Moulinex. I have only watched about 5 minutes of one of her programs and changed channels. I even switch over when her trailers come up now.

And as far as that Delia Smith is concerned, I can't think of a more patronising and arrogant old tumper than her >:( ...  An entire program on "How to boil an egg". I ask you!!!
Whenever I google for recipes, I always put in a " -Delia" after the search string.
Title: Re: Nigella
Post by: Obelixx on September 25, 2007, 12:19:50
There's a surprising number ofpeople out there who can't boil an egg.  Just look at that "worst cooks" competition the Beeb recently showed.  At least Delia's recipes work, taste good and use ingredients easily available and affordablefor most people.

Absolutely crying with laughter at this thread  ;D  ;D.  Funniest thing I've read in ages. And I thought it was going to be about flowers lol!

I can't bring myself to dislike Nigella too much...though that feels slightly wrong somehow!  I am greatly amused at the way she troughs at the meals she makes...I'm sure they probably overdub the snarfing, snorting, chomping sounds. I wondered if she'd just pick the plate up and suck it all up if they'd allow it.

"No Nigella...put the plate down. Knife and fork please, there's a good girl."

As for her recipes...what about Marco Pierre White with his brown sauce and worcester sauce concoctions? There you go...a supermarket version, just wack it all over Nigella,s grub and bob's your unc. Fusion food init?!

Title: Re: Nigella
Post by: Obelixx on September 25, 2007, 13:26:10
But Heldi, can you see yourself coming home from the deli with a pound of fresh white crab meat  to slap on some rocket to feed your OH?   How much would that cost even where you are with crabs fresh caught?   And can you see him surviving on an 8th share of a kilo of steak and a bit of salad?    It looked suspiciously like Italian tagliata to me but she didn't mention that.

She does admit to being greedy but after the second or third time it's not endearing and yes, she does trough.   I find I'm starting to be more interested in where she gets dresses to fit that boobs and bum formation (being curvy myself) and how she gets her hair to stay curled all day - or not.  Must have a hair and make up person to hand all the time.

That sort of wondering never afflicts me during real cookery programmes - or real gardening programmes either come to think.
Title: Re: Nigella
Post by: Heldi on September 25, 2007, 13:42:13
You are totally right Obby!  I couldn't see myself anywhere near the crab meat in our local fishmonger never mind a posh deli... asda crab paste sarnies morelike  :D (Eeew I feel sick now for even thinking of that!)

I have been totally distracted by her eating. Perhaps a little obsessed. I would have got the back of my knuckles rapped off my Dad if I'd eaten in such a fashion!
I have wondered about her hair. Its not real!!!!!!
Clothes...I think two pieces made out of that slinky stretchy stuff, with a cardi over the top.
I quite like her pans  ;D

Yes I can't say I am engrossed in the cooking either.

HI

I am not a fan of nigella, although i think delias mumsyness ment i did not really enjoy her programs either in fact i dont own one of her books. (i have used some recipies off the net) for for insparation i prefer Bill Granger and we have all his books and even one signed Next it would have to be Pru Leigh as her bible gets pulled out at least once a week, followed by Gary Rhodes, Jamie and James martin.

Hubbie would also list Elizabeth David up there with Bill and when hes looking for something new he will go back to her books which are more story orientated rather than a standard recipie book. And he is a big fan of Hesten but i think his recipies are a little OTT.

Did you know that james martin has had a kitchen garden the program is call james martin digs deep (http://uktv.co.uk/food/homepage/sid/5471) and i think it was on before jamies allotment fun.

Louise I watched that series. Beautiful walled garden with raised beds, (not jealous one bit  ::)). Greenhouse with coldframes attached outside, which probably cost more than the average house. With all the TV progs and County shows he does, that man never grew any of that stuff. He has his own gardener I bet.

I struggle to find a celebrity chef I actually like but I must say I like how Nigella eats. :D It's nice to see somebody who is so passionate about something and can't care less about how she looks while she stuffs her face! However I do agree that she shouldn't have bought a load of deli stuff on the programme. ::)

Oh, I just remembered my favourite cook - Madhur Jaffrey. I read most of her books and all her recipes are brilliant. I quite like Bill Granger's recipes too.

I can't stand James Martin,  Ed Bains, Ching He-Huang, Rachael Allen etc... In my opinion they shouldn't be called a professional cook!

Delia's good for every day stuff and I know a few less confident cooks who swear by her for success every time but for pure reading enjoyment with recipes as a bonus it has to be Jane Grigson or Elizabeth David for me.   I also like the Two Fat Ladies recipes - proper hearty grub and no nonsense with stacks or twiddles for presentation.   Other than that I tend to wing things and only use recipes for cakes and muffins that rely on fairly exact measures to work.

I do enjoy watching cookery programmes for inspiration though Nigella will be joining the Hairy Bikers, Ready Steady Cook and Ainsley Harriet in the "don't bother again" list.

Off with Nigella's head - she doesn't even make her own Thai Green Curry paste  :o

In my University days I relied on Katie Stewart - "The Times Calendar Cookbook", sort of pre-Delia but expecting a little more ability.

I really like Simon Hopkinson's "Roast Chicken and other Stories" or just about anything by Nigel Slater but of course nothing compares to our very own A4A recipe forum :)

Currently reading Locatelli's massive book (500pp) - a lucky friend got given two copies so passed one on to me!

I got one of her books on Cakes out of the library. There were some great cakes in it but I wouldn't bother buying the book because to make the cakes you'd have to buy about 20 different types of cake tins. A proper cook would would have standardised her sizes. But then she's got lots of money to buy them and a big kitchen to keep them in I guess.

The trouble is, her recipes (Nigellas) are often really nice but I think she's become a parody of herself but one step too far.

Love Rick Stein - in fact, our dog is called Chalky in memory of the old Chalkmeister.  Can't stand Gary Rhodes though.  Delia is very mumsy but again, some good solid recipes and taught a lot of us to cook I guess.

I was annoyed to find Nigella's books actually really good, I wasn't fond of her on TV at all, too 'Yummy Mummy'....'Oh it's taken me longer to put my lipstick on before dinner than make this dish...' However, I use her books esp. 'How to Eat' more than any others, it's split up into very user friendly sections and all the recipes I've tried have been great, OH particularly likes her famous 'Ham in Coca cola'........! :o

Hugh FW's 'Meat' book is also a gem, and he wins me over with his sheer enthusiasm for food on TV. Everyone else?  :-\

I love Hugh Fearnley Whatsit, and Fanny n Johnny were a riot!
Floyd is a definite fave, and who was the chap I used to watch as a kid that always had a glass of vino in his hand whilst cooking? Can see his face but cannot remember his name. (70's  hair & garb) He is probably the main reason I love to cook......and drink wine! (indoctrinated as a child see!)

Rick Stein, who clearly loves his food and isn't afraid to admit to being a miserable old so-and-so, and enthuses about the importance of quality and source.
Huge Whirly Fingerstall for sheer entertainment and inspiration for trying different things out of your own back yard.

I read at the weekend that she hired the bus that she's filmed on and the people on the bus are extras rather than 'real' people, much like most of her 'friends' on the series.  ::) Presumably she didn't hire the children as well...

Well if I am honest, I wouldn't mind being like her. She has class and is great looking to boot. Did anyone see her on the programmes with her first husband? I think his name was John Diamond, a journalist. He had mouth cancer and the way they got through it was admirable. She was such a supportive wife and a good mother. Nothing sexy about that senario. It was heartening to see their relationship during such an awful period. I think she can cook too, )lots better than I do!!)

Wonder if it would work with blackcurrants as well?

Yes, Barnie, I did the same with blackcurrants, but with sugar syrup, as we don't like maple syrup.  Nice and runny, poured it on vanilla icecream (from Farmers Market, of course).  The left overs were perfect as runny but not too runny jam.  :) :)
