Title: Damsons
Post by: Palustris on September 13, 2007, 13:58:06
This year looks like being a bumper ctop year. Trouble is we are still using puree from last year!. I have just picked a 2 gallon bucket full in about 20 minutes, and that is from just one small part of the hedge. Heaven knows how many pounds there are in the Damson Wood!

I picked 35lbs last week, stewed some for over-winter jam making, some used in jame for now, but ran out of jam jars, and made a yummy damson crumble for a friend - still loads left on trees, but think I've got all I can handle at the moment  ;D

Picked all we are going to pick and bagged ready for giving away. The crop this year would be in the cwts rather than the pounds.

Not a picture of a single damson, but this is what a bucket full looks like when bagged up and ready to be given away

That as well Valmarg... but you only need a couple of handfulls, so we tend to use the sloes for that!
;D

I should have to say saddad that we use more than 'a couple of handfuls' when making damson gin, and quite a drop of gin!!

The hedgerows round here are full of damson trees.  There are also a lot of sloes.

We have only ever made damson gin, but have been given to understand that sloe gin is superior.

We're not far away from each other, as the crow flies!

We used to live in Mickleover, but migrated to Alton (as in Towers) 30+ years ago.

Sorry Gordon, just tipped 60 kilos on the compost heap. Have to pick them or they fall on the path and make it very unpleasant to walk on.

Well, if you were closer you could come and help yourself. Indeed if anyone is closer they can come and pick their own! But hurry, they are beginning to go over.
