Post by: benji26 on September 12, 2007, 11:14:13
Hi all

Im new to A4A. Im looking at getting a little allotment - maybe a  half plot because my garden at home is minute because im in a council flat but i cnat wait to get to know you all and start planting - my council are very stingy inteh fact that they dont liek to help much so i dare say at soem point ill be putting a 'ive inherited a bombsite' post.

anyway i look forward to speaking to you all. once ive managed to get a plot im not sure whether to spend the winter preparing it ready for next year or what. any suggestions??

Welcome!!!!

I am new to this site (July) and have to say that I am now addicted to it. Everyone here are so friendly and helpful. you will get lots advice. Regarding your plot, it is now quite late to think about planting as you have not yet got one, and you may have a l,ot of prep work to do. If you are fortunate enough to get a "clean plot" then the brassicas are due to go in now and Onions, garlic go in in October (I think), another one is Kale although I know nothing on these. You may also be able to sow some cut and come again salads but not sure how much time you have left on them. Any way good luck and hope you get sorted soon

Hi Benji and welcome.
I've only just aquired my Lottie August 18th. Before that I was *Collecting Stuff* so I would be ready.
If you have a Wyevale close by, pop along and see what bargain seeds for 50p they have left.
Perhaps you could sign up for the Lidl's newsletters, then you will know in advance when the garden supplies etc are instore.
Poundstretcher or Wilkinsons are also places to keep an eye on for items like netting, string and canes etc.
Your local paper might have free ads, always worth a look on a Friday evening  ;D.
You never know what is going cheap or free.(My fave word)  ;)

Lauren  :D

P.S...Keep phoning who ever is running your allotments.
Or better still go and visit the site and let yourself be known. You never know someone might even share with you. (Have known it to happen before)  :)

Hi everyone, my beloved other half and 9 year old daughter decided they wanted an allotment so we put our name down on the council list and within 2 weeks got a plot! to say it was over grown would be an under statement 180 sq mt of 5-6 ft high weeds bushes and bits of rubbish, but too say the enthusiam didnt last long for my daughter (or other half ) would be saying the least so the allotment that I was to do nothing with except cook what was grown is now in my hands (I was gonna put capable hands then ). I have spent over 20 hours this week digging over the top half after 2 months of digging weeds out and clearing it and made a site for winter onions and garlic to go out now. At last i feel I am getting somewhere. So dont get disheartened with what they give you if I can get started so can you I have 3 kids a 6 month old 17 month old and 9 year old and I have a flat as well so we are not different keep in touch ( this is my first post ) let me know how it goes and can share them days were you could easily pack it in as well as when you feel good bout it!

Hi Benji, welcome , Benji don`t go to Wyvales they kill little birds, ROBINS, you can get cheap seeds at nearly all garden centres at the moment.  Tell us your news when you get your lottie, all the best. Rosebud. ;D
