Title: Garlic
Post by: Rosyred on September 10, 2007, 18:03:07
As its coming to that time of year again for planting garlic does anyone use shop brought garlic instead of seed garlic?

Are the bulbs from the shop brought stuff ok? and store ok?

Lots do. And for many it works well.

But - you have no choice, shop bulbs are not necessarily acclimatised to our climate & they could be from unregulated sources.

Whatever, you need BIG cloves. Some of mine are almost 1/4 the size of some market BULBS!

I have a friend grows garlic from Tesco garlic bulbs and he's always had a good crop, I mentioned that I had bought seed garlic from a seed company,  he didn't realise that you could buy it like that!! His are always great, mine were a complete waste of time with tiny bulbs, guess where I'm goping to buy my garlic to plant this year! ?  ::)

Glosterwomble,
Does your friend buy organic garlic or just your bog standard bulbs?

Thanks , Lauren  :)

Nit picking - as usual!

What is 'a good crop'? Same size as Tesco's?

Some of whose bulbs are 5cm across. Our cloves are more than 1cm!!

Hi , I always use supermarket garlic and have never had any problem with it. It grows and stores well. Yes the bulbs and cloves are smallish but does that matter?

Of course not - except for chef's preparation time - & planting.

& large ones are better for roasting & provide a great sense of satisfaction when visitors say, "wow, aren't they big"...

Well I think to save some money this year i'm going to try some shop brought indian supermarket style and only 1 seed pack to see if they work for me. I know what you mean on prep Tim this year mine are small and they take time trying to peel. This year garlic for me wasn't as good as last year, wasn't sure if it was were I brought them from as they seemed damp when I received them.

I planted both seed cloves bought from garden centre (Germidour) and cloves from supermarket (from Spain, France and China) last autumn. They were treated same and their performance and yields were exactly the same.  :) All suffered from rust but I think it was due to the wet weather we had this year. I was a bit disappointed with Germidour to be honest because I got very small bulbs although the cloves planted were huge. I think I may have needed to apply some kind of fertiliser to get bigger bulbs...

As I suggested - unregulated sources.
