Title: Best White, Outside, Seedless Grape?
Post by: OllieC on September 10, 2007, 11:05:44
Hi all

Any favourite white, seedless grapes for outside in the UK? Any to avoid?

I think I'm going to get a vine or 2...

Thanks in advance!

Ollie

Ollie, have just seen your post. I'm growing  - oh, dammit, I've forgotten the name now and I'm not logged on from home. It produces golden grapes, in fact I think there's 'golden' in the name.  I've been very impressed with it's progress anyway- it's only a baby and it cropped copiously.

Only problem is, with this year's weird summer weather, it got a bad attack of mildew - mainly I think because of the plants nearby (many of my fruits and veg got that this year), so I wouldn't hold that against it.

Anyway, if you can hang on till tomorrow, I'll check my info tonight and let you know more about it.

Cool Banana, Amazin... I shall wait patiently. I'm not going to blame anything for getting mildewy this year. I think I've contracted a little bit myself, just from trying to do the weeding.

Hi Ollie - it's called Golden Champion! According to the blurb:

This Vitis vinifera is probably the best white grape available that will grow reliably outside in the UK, and produce a good crop. Vigorous plants will produce high yielding bunches of richly flavoured, golden yellow grapes that can be used for desert or wine making purposes. Picking late September â€" October.

Hope this helps (hic!)

;D

I've done a (very) little bit of homework and we're thinking of getting 'Himrod'.

I grow 'Himrod' outdoors in a container against my SW facing wall and every year it gives a good crop of sweet, thin skinned, seedless grapes regardless of the summer. This year's crop of about 20 bunches are just ripening now. Cut back every winter and given an annual top dress and BFB/ chicken manure pellets it seems to do fine. It would get my vote for trouble free growing with the characteristics you're after.

Thanks Lucho, I think that makes up my mind for me, but wish we had room for more than one  :)
