Title: Rice in the UK
Post by: MattD on September 09, 2007, 10:39:56
Anyone ever grown rice in the UK?  The kids were asking me last night over supper whether we could grow rice and my initial thought was no, but then I thought maybe it would be fun.

It grows in italy and france so with a good summer I reckon it might work here.

But all the rice I've ever seen is polished and treated and probably isn't going to sprout, so where could I get seed?

Anyone got any advice?

Matt

It's definitely a warm-climate crop, but I've heard of people growing it in greenhouses. Different varieties have widely varying needs; it grows in everything from damp soil to six feet of water.

My friend grew Japanese rice and wild rice, the wild rice grew on the edge of his stream naturally and the Japanese rice he grew in soil  in a huge poly tunnel which was kept damp but not in a paddy field, this ws just outside Vancouver
