Title: Is there a problem with the site?
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on September 01, 2007, 09:51:42
It may just be my computer, but over the last few days, I've noticed that odd threads have become inaccessible, apparently at random. I can't get on the swop board at all. Anyone else notice this?

I just tried to access the Swap Shop just the normal way, and as per usual it wouldn't let me. The I had a brain wave (might have to lie down now  ;D).
I tried the same Swap Shop going via *Internet Explorer* and it worked \o/...Yippee.

I should have thought of that; I do GCSE marking online, and EDEXCEL's horrible software won't work at all with AOL.

It appears to be a problem with the site and AOL.

I'm not sure why, but if you report it to AOL hopefully they will look into it :(

I am trying to figure out what is going on from this end.

Is there something you've changed in the last couple of weeks?

An upgrade of PHP (part of the back end software) but that should in no way affect the front end, and if it did it would affect everyone.

It does appear to be something to do with AOL, what browser do you use?

Mostly I'm in AOL. If I go into IE, it works there, so it's AOL's software that's doing it.

If AOL users want they can try this, it has worked for other sites ...

CLEAR THE WEB BROWSER CACHE AND REBUILD THE AOL ADAPTER
A damaged Web browser cache and/or a damaged AOL Adapter may cause this issue. Windows© networking requires that a network adapter exist for any application that must access the Internet. The AOL software uses the AOL Adapter to access the Internet.

1. Sign off and close the AOL software.
2. On the Windows taskbar next to the clock, click the AOL© icon, then click SYSTEM INFORMATION....

NOTE: If the AOL icon is not displayed, click the START button, select PROGRAMS or ALL PROGRAMS, select AMERICA ONLINE, then click AOL SYSTEM INFORMATION.

3. Click the OK button.
4. Click the UTILITIES tab.
5. In the BROWSER section, next to CURRENT CACHE, click the CLEAR button until the Current Cache Size reads 0 KB.
6. In the AOL UTILITIES section, next to AOL ADAPTER, click the REBUILD button.
7. Click the OK button.
8. Click the CLOSE button.
9. Restart the computer and launch the AOL software again. The AOL Adapter will be rebuilt automatically.

Let me know if you have any success.

It is very frustrating, it is a problem with AOL, and the way the AOL software accesses the internet.

From what I understand ....

When you use the AOL software you go through an extra AOL server to access all sites on the internet (a proxy), it is this which causes problems on occasion.

All I can suggest is you report the problem to AOL, and hope they sort it out.

I'll continue to see if I can do anything from this side.

Cheers

It has taken me 10 minutes to get to read this thread and to reply. We have not got AOL. never had it and I cannot get into some threads and the others take so long to appear and need so many refreshings that I no longer bother with most of them.

I have deleted cookies, rebuilt my adaptor, checked my connection, reconfigured my forewall and done a spybot check. Everything else is like sh*it off a shovel, I can still read posts in the watershed, but I can't post for myself. It took ages to get in here too, this time. (I am with aol ::)
I think I might delete aol and reload it later- maybe it is corrupted.

I am going to try moving the site to a new server, to see if that helps.

It will result in some downtime (probably Wednesday night / Thursday morning).

Let us hope that improves things.

Maybe I'm just lucky - no significant problem.
