my beetroot is looking quite good now lost a lot because of weather this summer hence it is making quite big globes.

the ground to the left of the beetroot will be sowed with spring onions tomorrow all being well, they should be ready for pulling about late March next year.
Its getting better for beetroot earlier in the year they were slug caviar!! Richard you have grown tons ;)
Just harvested 3 woppers one was 1lb 4oz in weight and in total 2lb 7oz :-) I was worried that they would be woody but they feel soft and juicy. I picked them for the beetroot chocolate cake as i only need 250g i am going to cut the rest and roast it for the bbq.
Richard what are you following your beetroot with and how are you going to store all that yummy stuff :)
cambourne7 it will be followed by spring cabbage either this year or next year if it is not of the ground in time, most of the beetroot will be sold to a couple of local shops who are very glad of it.
Got no beetroot through this year. Sowed over a full packet.
KT dont be 2 down i found a row of carrots growing which i sowed in March!!
I have re-sown some beetroot a couple of weeks ago.
Who knows, we MAY get an indian summer yet 8)
Debs ;D
I had a great crop of beetroot this year.
I never sow directly into the ground though because of germination problems.mine go into cells now and are then planted out when big enough to handle.

Never had any probs with transplanting.
nor me. all mine that survived the slug grew well and even some of those with slug munch had edible bits !
my last tray sown a month ago seem to be struggling though. just not getting anywhere big enough to plant out. Still i'll keep them in the modules and see what happens.
i've got to evict the beetroot grown in the flower border today to make room for some pansies and primroses.
;D
1/2 acre of Beetroot, Richard? You're in the business??
Very pleased with Cylindra - right shape for everything.
i grow mine in cells as well1 the cell ones are 3 times the size of the direct sown ones that went in before them i cell grow most things not carrots tho
marg
i grew mine in seed trays then transplanted them across they did really well are all now in the freezer or pickled
Mine weren't as good as last year, so I resowed in the ground and now they are too close, can I thin out and replant because like KT I didn't think I could transplant them. :-\ ??? ;D ;D ;D
Transplanted last night so see how they go. ;D ;D ;D
An elderly chap on our plot was transplanting some a few weeks back and I asked him about it. He said he never transplanted them until he saw someone do it and their beetroot was better than his, so he does it all the time now. I put some in some 6" pots 3 weeks ago so will try transplanting some just to see what happens
I mixed my beetroot seeds with my parsnip seeds this year and it seams to have worked.
:o You got beetsnips and parsroots?? ;D
Seriously Cam, never heard of dong this. What are the advantages, or am I being dim?
You've got me Cam. ??? :-\ ::) ??? ??? :-\ ??? ;D ;D ;D
Isn't it something to do with the parsnips taking ages to germinate & grow and the beetroot comes through quickly to mark out the row & you can pull them before the snips need the space? Or am i barking mad too? ;)
That sounds feesible Kitten. ;)
What feesible that Kitten's barking. ;D ;D ;D
Got me beetroot in . They look amazing cos there are no gaps. Lets hope that they grow some balls ;)

I was learned as a young un by my Grandad to sprinkle salt in the drill as I was sowing beetroot seeds .I still do this. Does anyone else?.
If I remember I do,something to do with being a coastal veg!
Picked a couple of small ones earlier and watered the ones I spaced out.Plenty of pellets waiting for the slugs. ;D ;D ;D
