Title: Shallot size for show?
Post by: Mrs Ava on August 22, 2007, 12:06:45
For the first time, I have some fab shallots and I would like to enter them in the village show next month.  I remember seeing Hugh Fearlessly Eats-it-all measuring his when he was at River Cottage to make sure they were the right size.  So my question is, what is the correct diameter for a show shallot??

Hi EJ. Just seen your post:
There are two sizes recognised as the 'norm' depending on which show you attend. Some shows use RHS rules when your shallots have to pass through a 25mm ring. The NVS rules state that they should pass through a 30mm ring. Personally, if they pass through my teeth they get full marks.

hehehe Ken.  I shall cut a piece of card and have a measure.  Not very big though.  Hope I haven't used all my small ones as pickles thinking the big ones would be show stoppers.
