Title: Herb Identification
Post by: Paulines7 on August 17, 2007, 12:42:29
Can anyone help me in identifying these four herbs please?

The first picture shows sprigs from each of them.  This is followed by four pictures of the whole plants in order from left to right of the sprigs.

I have a feeling that they are marjoram or oregano but definitely four different types.  The labels are lost so if you have any similar to mine I would appreciate their names please.

Hi Pauline,

I'd say Marjoram, Lavender, Marjoram, Marjoram...

Hi Pauline,

I'd say Marjoram, Lavender, Marjoram, Marjoram...

Thank you OllieC but herb number2 definitely isn't lavender.

It is still in its pot where it has been for a couple of years now but the label has come off.  Here is another picture of it that clearly shows the leaves.

Could it be Origanum `Gold Tip`?

No1 might be Origanum `Album`

I`m guessing the other 2 are wild Marjoram and Pot Marjoram

Sorry! It was a half joke (thanks, manics!). They're so hard to tell apart, as I guess you know!

Perhaps you've read this article? It doesn't help much with identification but it stopped me feeling bad when I gave up  ;D .

Good article!  I thought I had mint when I first got the plot; then someone said it was marjoram - but now I see that I have the 'pungent, spicey flavour' and purple flowering of common oregano!

And that it is perfect in Mousaka.

Thanks. :)

Thank you OllieC, that article, it has been very helpful.   At least I know that they are all from the genus Origanum.

Cleo, Origanum `Album`is white and my ones have a colour range from pale pink to purple.     Origanum `Gold Tip`has gold tipped leaves and mine have either plain or mottled leaves.

Thank you both for your help.
