Title: nearly missed this one - but how!
Post by: Hot_Potato on August 10, 2007, 22:26:52
on visit to allotment yesterday - suddenly spotted this monster :o

I'd not been for about 8 or 9 days and couldn't believe my eyes...it's a courgette 'De Nice a Fruit Rond' - not grown them on plot before (only at home in pots) and pick them when about tennis ball size or maybe a bit smaller....this one measured almost 6" diameter and 17" in circumfrence

think I shall stuff it :P   (with something ;) )

Easily done as the plants get bigger
Mine have done nothing this year.

I had one about the same size, I chopped it in half accross the middle and leveled them off, scooped the centres out, steamed it in the microwave for about 8 mins then stuffed it with veggie mince and sonions and toms.  Then covered in cheese and under a hot grill.  WOW.  very very good.

I have another one even bigger and I am leaving it to see how big it grows!

Enjoy your monster.

we're growing the round ones this year for the first time, picking them when they're about a pound weight. They don't seem to store as well as the marrow types. They have tended to go soft quite quickly, and some have a bit of discolouration inside, at the flower end. Maybe it's too much rain

I'm  growing these and think I prefer them to the long variety.  I dipped some of mine in tempura batter and fried them ... yummy.

how stupid am I?.....don't anwer :)   gave you those measurements and yet it didn't occur to me to weigh it!   just have (yes, it's still sitting on my worktop) and it weighs exactly 2lbs!! :o

that microwave method sounds good - might try it - there's enough here to feed me for 2 days I think

bet the small ones dipped & fried are yummy :P

I `missed` quite a few courgettes that became marrows-put them outside at 40p each and am now £2.80 better off ;)

How silly am I, I didn't know these where courgettes as i've got one plant outside my greenhouse. Mind you it hasn't done very much and no flowers yet.

well this is what I did with the 'biggy' as shown in message posted on 10th August, as told to a friend last night.

well I used my 'football' shaped courgette at last - the big one......cut it in half & took thin slice off bottoms of each half so hey would stand on a baking tray....removed biggest seeds (there were some of course cos it had grown so big) scooped out rest of fleshy part....fried off an onion, shallot, garlic, added flesh from courgette then added small mushrooms (about 5) 6 cherry tomatoes, 2 spoonfuls of frozen peas, about 4 dessertspoonfuls of 'meat free' savoury mince and half a pack of oyster & spring onion sauce (which was already open) added a bit more water and simmered altogether on hob for 20 minutes....then piled the mixture back into the 2 halves of courgettes.....baked in the oven for just over an hour at 180c

forgot to say that before I filled the empty cases, put them in microwave side by side for about 6 minutes to 'soften' casing a bit......this is how they looked before they went into the oven - looked much the same when they came out but bubbling & piping hot! served it with a large corn on the cob and a thick slice of olive bread (hot)....oh and I only ate one half ;)
