Title: How best to support Bush Tomatoes
Post by: Barnowl on August 09, 2007, 17:42:51
My first year with bush tomatoes - obviously a lot to learn about supporting them from the collapsed state of my Urbikany (see pic) - and that's after I've removed some of the broken branches. Suggestions welcome......

I think we did this one before.

I use  6 inch square reinforcing wire, it is very strong, I use it full width about 4 feet or so and coil it so that it is about 30 inches across the top. Someone prior when I mentioned said this is too hard to cut here as mine came with me in my container and they felt it was thinner than the UK stuff, but I have since compared it and it is practically the same.

It is easy to get your hands through for picking and had worked well for me.

Maybe someone had a better idea but I know this one works very well.

Thanks Jeannine - essentially a 4ft high cylinder of 30" diameter  - too late for this year but will remember for next year by getting hold of the wire now  :)

Barnowl, make them as big as you like, they take abit of cutting but they last forever, we fasten them together with strong wire, they do work really well.

If it's for the garden, the support will need a bit of prettying up otherwise OH will give me grief - may have to develop stackable system that grows with the plant, but I have the requirements clear in my mind.
