Title: Any chance of some rain please?
Post by: Garden Manager on June 17, 2004, 12:54:20
I know some places in the north have been getting some but is there any chance of sending some down to SW england at all?

Cant remember when we last had some significant rain, must be at least 6 weeks (how long before a dry spell is classed as a drought i wonder?). The garden and the veggie plot are in desperate need of rain water. i have been watering daily of course, but it is not the same is it? (and what a chore is watering!  >:().

I even found a couple of established border plants wilting last night  :'((i dont water established plantings in th garden). OK after a can or 2 of water, but a bit unnnesesary and unexpected i have to say.

I seem to remember a long range forecast back in the spring was fo a wet early summer. I guess they got THAT one wrong.  :(

And some in the South East too please. It is forecase for saturday, but it'll probably be like last saturday - just enough to make it uncomfortable to be in the garden, but not enough to do the garden any good.

It's now five weeks since I sprained my ankle and there hasn't been any significant rain for all that time. Mr Aqui is getting sick of carrying buckets of water downstairs from the kitchen tap (I really must get an outside tap installed). And I'm getting fed up with having to ration the water.

Ah - I see what the problem is. Usually at this time of the year I paint my toe nails when I wear my sandals. Whenever I painted my nails, it always rained the next day, so I couldn't wear sandals. But this summer I've been unable to wear sandals as they have high-ish heals and I have to wear flat shoes due to the ankle, so I haven't painted my nails. I'll do them tonight...

we've had thick grey clouds all day, but still dry. I understand it's a lot cooler outside, but I haven't been out since I arrived at work!

I put my shallotts out to dry today, so I expect a localised rainstorm over Katie's trampoline.

Took the dogs for a run in the fields today and there are cracks everywhere - about 2" wide in places.

I have been able to show off my painted toenails for quite a few days now - so it obviously doesn't work here in Herts :D ;)

I went out on the lottie at 7:30am and it was overcast and windy. I thought yes some rain. Then the sun came out, then it was cloudy again, then there was this light drizzle. Pah! Call that rain!  >:(
Title: Re:Any chance of some rain please?
Post by: legless on June 18, 2004, 07:17:02
light drizzle while down the allotment last night - from the blackest clouds ever, i expected much more! but it seems to have rained steadily all night which is good news indeed as its way too dry up here!

i'll leave it here for another couple of hours then send it down richard...

and it rained and rained - hoorah - drizzled through the night and is raining nicely now - just in time for the school run! But more importantly, my pototoes are just flowering so perfect for them, and all my lovely salady things that I was beginning to worry about.  I'll keep it until about lunchtime, then send it down to the rest of you guys for the afternoon - so get your washing out now, and it will be dry just in time!

Post by: aquilegia on June 18, 2004, 09:19:24
It looked and felt like it was going to rain last night, so I didn't bother watering. I then also didn't have time to do my toenails, so it's still dry here.

Tonight I shall water the garden, put some washing out and paint my toenails, so it WILL rain.

My colleagues think I'm weird because I want it to rain!

*aqui can currently be seen doing a rain dance round the office*

Painted toes and hung the washing out, and it rained, for all of 2 minutes!  >:(  The sky is still moody over Chelmsford so hopefully later it will persistently piddle down, but not until I have pegged the washing in please.  ;)

Derbex - it's too high up. I hope it's moving south.

It's sunny here (london). dark, thick clouds, but sun, not rain is coming from them. (I don't think I've ever moaned before because it's sunny!)
Title: Re:Any chance of some rain please?
Post by: Garden Manager on June 18, 2004, 14:07:45
Too right Aqui. Love the sun as much as the next man (or woman  :)). But that said am bored with it now, and sooooo bored with watering.

But lets not have that in between 'will it wont it' kind of weather lets have some good old fashioned english summer rain!

Still they are about to do the famous rain dance in SW1 (Wimbledon) so at least London will be getting some rain next week.  ;D

Got to South Wigston on the train and it started to rain, by time we reached Leicester it was absolutely chucking it down.I couldn't walk in that, had to wait for the bus. It bitterly cold rain as well. :'( Very nice bus driver dropped me off at the end of my street. :D  This is great for the lottie.

Think we in the North from Budgiebreeder up must have had it all - absolutely poured all last night and bucketing "showers" (5 mins in between each) up until teatime then sun came out.  Had to go to lottie to top up tomato troughs and outside crops were standing tall and lookign good - not battered at all.  thanks, thanks thanks but give us a wee break now - just gentle nighttime showers please.

Now 10 p.m. and it's chucking it again - maybe enough is enough for some  things but the tatties will love it

Well in West Sussex today, despite a forecast of lots of rain (a black cloud with 3 raindrops on the map), we have blue skies, sunshine and not a cloud in sight. Although I can't complain, we did have a whole day of rain last week Thursday. But it's much cooler, feels almost autumn like.

Please Southeasterners(?) do a little rain dance, we have had our quota, all 4 grandchildren housebound today because of rain/wet grass/didn't bring jackets and me thinking of my strawberries maybe turning to mush.

To be honest, the ground did desparately need it especially the peas BB (whatever were you meaning? ::))  Dry but damp at the mo with dark clouds still

How far south did the rain go? I was coming out of the Royal Albert Hall at 5:30pm when i got caught in a downpour which caused all taxi's to be taken and us to miss our train. Tell me the rain extended far enough to make all this suffering worth it. ;)

Sarahr, we didn't get any rain in West Sussex today, sunny all morning, then very dark clouds in pm, thought it would rain but nothing. Perhaps the clouds were all rained out by the time they reached me.

The weather has really changed here in Whitley Bay.  I think it has reverted back to April, as we have had quite heavy showers all day, and it is quite chilly.  We even had to put our gas fire on at home tonight.

We did need rain, but I have had enought now, thank you. "Can I have the sunshine back now please"?  ;D busy_lizzie

Dorset has been cloudy and quite cold (for the time of year), though did have SOME sun yesterday. (Frustrating first cloud and cloudy next minute blazing sun - didnt know what to wear!).

No rain as yet (apart form a few small drops), though has threatened on numerous occasions.

We will be getting our comeuppance during the next wek though. Wind (gales?) and rain on tuesday and wednesday!  GREAT  ::)

Nah Mimi that wont work. Have tried it twice in the last 24 hours - no go.

Gave everything a good soak last night in the hope of getting rain - nothing. Again today it was trying to rain whilst I was watering some new plants in and THAT didnt work either. Seemed to scare the rain of if any thing ::)

Hooray, hooray it rained properly yesterday!

I did the rain dance - known as laying out some soil to dry so it can be sieved and less than an hour later it started spitting. I carried on (sieving compost - lots of sieving yesterday!) and then it started tipping down. Later (on the way home from riding) it CHUCKED it down. No plant watering; the pond was refilled!  ;D

Tell me why were you having to DRY soil on purpose. Surely it was dry enough already. Mine certainly is!

Richard - it was the leftovers from digging the pond. It'd been stored in a compost bag so the bottom half was still very wet - wet clay soil - so impossible to sieve.
Title: Re:Any chance of some rain please?
Post by: Garden Manager on June 21, 2004, 11:32:58
Was this to make your famous ( ;)?) compost mix then Aqui?

Hence the need to seive i suppose   :)

Indeedy it was Richard (and for earthing up the spuds). It's so stoney, it has to be done! (and then we get more pebbles to go in the pond!)

Maybe we'll be getting more than we want :

QuoteTransmitted by the Met Office at 08:55 on Monday 21 June

The Met Office is still expecting a deepening depression to sweep northeastwards across England on Wednesday, bringing a period of wet and windy weather. There will be a spell of prolonged rain, leading to 20-40mm in places, locally 60mm, however, at this stage, rainfall accumulations are not expected to lead to widespread disruption.

The weeds have had far too much rain. Wimbledon is already 45 matches behind. :o  I think the blame lies with Wimbledon. Three weeks and hardly any rain. The minute it starts it chucks it down like it's never going to end. >:( So if the sun could come in time for tomorrow so I can finally get down the allotment this week, I would be very greatful. OK. That's it. I've had enough of it now. Couldn't do anything in the garden yesterday and then nearly got blown off the horse.

Still at least it'll be a while before we need to water the garden again. And the pond has been topped up (by the looks of it we've had about 6inches of rain since sunday!) It's now almost overflowing!

Needless to say i shall never buy another plant at B Q.

Rosebud - it's exactly the same at my local B&Q. They had a masive sale with 25% off all plants. So I excitedly went along. Only to find out why they are having to sell them off quick... I rescued a couple of things that didn't look bad. I felt like I should report them to the RSPCP (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Plants).  :'(

I've stopped buying plants from there because of this and they are too expensive and they use peat.

You shouldve said 'well if they are going in a skip any way let me have some' (cheap/free). Then you could've used your green fingers and revived them and sold them on for charity (those you didnt want yourself). Boo sucks to B&Q!

All the plants probably want is a good soaking and be fine. What dreadfull waste!

Oz, I've tried to explain you to people - "outsiders" you know - but words can not suffice!!  You do me a power of good anyway as well as the plants, guess that's not people dust gathering  around my p.c. it must me Oz Dust filtering out and spreading good feelings and smiles.   ;):D

Lottie like a bog yesterday, felt such an idiot running back and fore from the tap to the g'hosue carrying cans of water and trying to hold up a brolly with the rain pounding - just to top up those greedy toms.  Dried up today and everything (especially those weeds) putting on massive growth.  Rain forecast for tomorrow I think - please nooooo .....

Richard it was pitiful to see the plants just left to die, because of a want of a drink...............I did ask last time for reduced plants that were just left to die and i got a resounding no so i dident ask this time.  I will not shop there for plants again...........
What i have decided to do is take my camera down there and send some photos to the head office and see what they think ,i am still so cross about it............Rosebud. >:(

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I personaly have a love/hate relationship with B&Q over plants.

Generaly i have avoided shopping there for plants (i have nearer garden centres which are better if a bit pricey). What I have grown from there I have had mixed results with.  Firstly when planting up a new shrub border i wanted a Viburnum tinus, and found one at B&Q which i bought and planted over a year ago. The plant at first seemed healthy and vigourous. Then we had theat long dry summer last year and whils the plant was watered, it has noe trived and is now the same size as when i bought it and not looking as happy. V. tinus i thought were supposed to be bomb proof shrubs and of course i cannot prove any thing, but the fact that it camer from B&Q does not help. On a different note we were given a rose a few months ago, bought from B&Q. This has thrived and has begun to flower already. My only criticism is that the checkout staff removed the label so i dont know what variety it is! Pink and highly double is all i know about it.

The point is you CAN get good plants from there but you can also get duff ones as well.  Overall though i prefer to go elsewhere for plants. For other garden products though they are pretty good value it think.

At least in this weather the B&Q plants will be getting a drink of sorts!
