Does anyone play any musical instruments and if so what i play
On this occasion i use the word musical lightly! ;D
Funny you should say that, I'm a music teacher! I also teach piano and play the drums and violin (but not very well!!) placed at the back of the 2nd violins in the college orchestra!! ::)
how cool, my daughter has just completed her teaching diploma for piano and is sitting her advanced one fairly soon. I play the drums I still have lessons once a week and learn everything from rock to swing, havent done any of my grades dont see any point, brother is self taught on guitar and sings, could have our own band lol,
just out of curiosity do you know any good websites for drum score?
I play piano, church organ
http://rdeneau.free.fr/ is a good one
http://drumbum.com/drumtabs/ some good links
Don't follow scores for the drums just picked up a few styles, should try though!
Your daughter sounds like shes doing really well ;D
Classical, latin and spanish guitar here ...
thanks biscombe off to have a look
hey curry we are rapidly building a band here what we gonna call ourselves?

I learned to play the piano when young - gave it up......had more lessons years and years later but had to get rid of piano when moving, as not enough room to house it......have always wanted to give it another go - can still cope with right hand ok but struggle with left and putting them together nowadays ???
my brother, also learned, stopped when young but took it up again and later became a music teacher, then let it drop again but now is retaking exams all over again & loving every minute of it.....he also plays, violin, recorder and cello....he's the one with the talents :)
yep my brother did too, my sister no musical interest at all and me as a drummer well i can count to four and hit things what more can i say ha ha
Hot Potato I have the same problem as you. I took piano lessons for years when I was a lass and after years of leaving it alone I tried to read and play on an organ and I couldnt read the left hand and play. I wish I had stuck to my music. My Mother was the musician in the family and played one of her organs to her last days.
I can play a CD. Does that count? ;D ;D ;D

I made it once to first violins in a youth orchestra. Ask me what the strings are on a violin or ask me to read music- I can't now.
I play too many and it gets in the way of everything else :) I play to varying degrees of incompetence, guitar, bass, tinwhistle, mandolin, melodeon and bandoneon. I can get a tune out of others ( and I own some more) but those are the main culprits!
All the best
Steve
PS Yes, I am an old folkie :)
Oh I am so jealous now. I always wanted to learn piano but I was the youngest. My brother was given money for lessons and he skipped off, then my sister was allowed and she did the same thing. when I asked I was tols Oh no we ahve tried that before, so I had to keep on dancing.
Mind you I still have tap shoes and can still do it.. does tapping count??
Name for a band??
Playing Blightly!!
The Mulchers
The Lottie Folks
I can play the triangle, you can hire me out if you want to for a fair charge ;D ;D
I play the Cornet and am a member of www.flixtonband.org.uk. I also play the piano, not regularly though anymore. I used to play piano to a reasonable standard, but now whenever I play it really makes my brain ache!
I play the flute - played in the school orchestra many years ago, and also since then in a couple of ad hoc ensembles. And I learnt the piano at the same time, but didn't really take to it that much. :) :)
I'm a bellringer, does that count?
I played flute and piano to a reasonable standard, playing in school and youth orchestras, then lack of practice and children caused fingers to slow down! I still play though, and then four years ago started to take up the oboe. Now that IS a challenge - does anybody else play? I play in a chamber music group, as well as as a "harmonie" - band - http://www.harmonierognonaise.com and music has become a very important part of our family - my two daughters play now too.
The hard part as always - finding time to practice!
My wife was an opera singer. (Now retired, apart from the odd 'old folks' concert.) I've spent my life surrounded by highly talented musicians and my own talents only go as far as being able to play a few scales on the piano! (I can follow a score, though.)
Self and OH both play guitar. We have seven guitars between us and no free cupboard space.
I can play recorder and flute, any sizes, also OK on saxophone - sounds like we have a great ensemble between us all.
As for names:
The Potterers
Dirty Diggers
Shed 7 (hasn't somebody recently calledc themselves that - are they allotmenteers?)
Kathi
I can do the black note thingy on the piano (chopsticks?) - thats about it.
Wasn't very good at recorder.
Small person likes his "drum kit" (mixing bowl, saucepan lid, biscuit tins...) which he plays while watching Animusic ( http://www.animusic.com/ ). Last week, we were thinking of getting a children's drum kit for him!!!!
We have a USB keyboard too for him to play on.
I'm currently learning guitar (trying to anyway! - anyone got any useful hints and tips?) and I used to play trumpet and clarinet.
Shed 7 are fab! Been around ages, just touring again, go see them if they're near you!
:)
Banjo for me
Bassoon for my missus
I used to play the flute, but it's years since I've played, can still get a note out of it, but can't remember the fingering. Might pick it up again one day when I have more time!

Hi
I play the piano and the flute.
;D
FANTASTIC playlist Biscombe ;D
I saw the Cure in 19 hundred and something other .. in a Roman amphitheatre in the South of France. The build-up to the gig was FANTASTIC! Hundreds of Robert Smith fans shaking their hairstyles in the light-show - a veritable FEAST of hairspray and black hair-dye.
And then .... Robert launched himself onto the stage. He'd had all his hair shaved off. Oh how I laughed ;D
I played clarinet as a yoof. Reached the giddy heights of being a member of Chesterfield Intermediate orchestra. Left aforementioned orchestra because they'd never heard of Acker Bilk and wouldn't know what 'jazz' was if it jumped up and bit them on the nipple.
Tried to teach myself saxaphone but the dog was having NONE of it! Howling and wailing and eventually he chewed up my collection of Cure records.
He's on borrowed time.
Awwwwwwww! Trix!! that dog!!!!! Replaced your Cure collection yet??
Whos on at Blackpool Biscombe.?
Got grade 1 piano 30+ years ago. Took up clarinet a couple of years ago. And I sing, if that counts!

Can't tell you how excited I am!!!
You temted???
I recenlty started playing the Viola!!!
A few 'old' names there at Blackpool!!
I havent been to a gig for a while, but dont really fancy seeing the old bands anymore, I saw the Buzzcocks, SLF etc a few years back and they looked so old, it wasnt the same!
I saw AFI last Nov, fantastic gig, and will definately see them again, and again, and again!!!
I played piano as a youngster, mainly classical, got to Grade 5 when my music teacher died so did not continue. Years later bought a keyboard which is great as there are so many backing rhythms to play around with so now I can turn my hand to latin, dicso, big band, rock & roll etc. Cheating a bit I suppose but it's great fun and the dogs love it!!! ;D
Ok I lied, modesty got the better of me, i not only can play the triangle (and the tambourine ;)) but am also a whizz on the descant, treble and soppanino and have played many a show in front of the Lord Mayor :o, actually, you have just reminded me of how brilliant that I am and I now forsee a career in busking :P ;D
Biscombe you were/are some serious punk if you're into Conflict, Subhumans and Citizen Fish. What about American stuff- DK's, Nomeansno? I seen someone post on here under name of Fugazi.

OH used to be in The Straps....they are playing at Blackpool on Saturday (without him I'm afraid, a subsequent line up!) he is debating whether or not to drive up as he is on the guest list........ 8) Unfortunately I'm working :(
I told my son about the punk fest. He's dead jealous that you are going. Pitty he wasnt, as then I would get a rest from his music, lol.

Thanks for the offer, but I am more of a 'Bowling For Soup' person :-[

Can't play an instrument and sing rather badly, but we had a great Christmas party one year and the theme was Music. All instruments were home made, eg. comb and paper, skiffle bass, thimbles and wash boards, spoons, etc. Amazing how well we all played together with no rehersal ;D
but possibly the alcoholic lubrication had something to do with it.
I can get a tune out of my old leather ferret (concertina) plus loads of other instruments the melodeon being my favorite.
35 years in various celidh bands, I once played with the Pogues for a couple of gigs and accompanied Elton John on the tamborine at a open air concert in my yoof
A good name for the a4a band
The Stinking Prongfull after the Loving Spoonfull.
Or if it is punk you are after how about The Fouling Piece after the Sex Pistols
I can just about play a load of Shadows tunes on the guitar. If you closed your eyes when I was at it, you would think Hank Marvin was in the same room ......
..........strangling a cat
and I can play The Entertainer on the piano, tho i have to call it something else, because of the Trades Description Act
Another flute and piano player here. Went to a music school after a fight to get in - they didn't want me 'cos I'm partially deaf, but my father pointed out that I had more than reached their minimum entry requirements and that I did a lot of practicing! (This was before anyone had heard of Evelyn Glennie).
I also had singing lessons and I really, really wanted to be an opera singer. However, I reluctantly decided I really didn't have the talent (or the voice) to be the next Joan Sutherland, and as I was useless at playing in front of people I decided to be a music librarian instead, which I did for many years. Just as well really, as I suffered a severe loss of hearing earlier this year so had I been a practical musician, I would have had to retire. Funny how life works out!
One and only daughter has just passed Grade 8 flute, and also plays the clarinet. She also played French horn for a while, but gave it up out of consideration for the neighbours.
(Just heard that Luciano Pavarotti has gone into hospital. He and Joan Sutherland have given me hours of pleasure over the years. Hope the King of the High C's makes a good recovery.)
Lillypad
hey Biscombe no problem dont think youve hijacked the thread all in context and im enjoying it too
I play the old Joanna. Started when I was 4, exams up to grade 8, 6 concerts, 1 infront of the Mayor. First teacher died, new teacher was very classical when I wanted to play more jazz. Gave up lessons but we still have a piano and I tickle the ivories from time to time. Both kids are now learning and it is lovely to hear them play. I think it is a great skill to be able to read music and feel children at schools should have more opportunities to lean different instruments, not just the recorder, and without it costing a small fortune.
Piano, guitar, feadóg, all self-taught; violin - rusty (me, not the violin!), vocals - was classically trained, but got into trouble for 'adapting' Purcell's Nymphs and Shepherds into Ride a White Swan by T Rex during an exam.
Names for the band -
The Sprouts
The Plot
The Blighters
Or, considering all of us lot jamming together, just - Blight!
First single: I Got Rotation
First album title: A Plot on the Landscape
(I'd better get writing then)
;D

Excellent advice for learning any instrument.
I play mandolin with a number of other people (on fiddle, flute, guitar etc) every Monday at the pub. There are some really fantastic musicians in our session and without exception, the "brilliant" players are the ones who've played for hours a day every day, for many years.
Loving this thread!!! Just got back from punk fest 4am this morn, had a briliant time!!!!!bit jaded now, may go back to bed!!!!
Glad you had a good time...
I played the clarinet for years when I was a kid, thinking of taking it up again, but there don't seem to be enough hours in the day!

Spill the beans then!
Who rocked and who were pants?
Especially The Damned and Straps?! ;D
Hi Deb!
Sooooooo many good bands to see!! what a ball we had! The Straps clashed with Conflict so we missed them :-\ hope to see em next year.
The Dammed were ok, but The Casualties, The Restarts, Sick On The Bus, Subhumans, Citizen Fish, The Blaggers, PAIN, The Peacocks and The Ruts were exceptional not forgetting the funniest man alive Captain Hotknives on the acoustic stage! Can't wait for next year!
I dunno about all this anarcho punk... the best band I've seen so far this year was The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, they were brilliant. They did versions of Psycho Killer and Smells like Teen Spirit and Teenage Dirtbag - does that count as punk or am I completely out of touch...
That sounds great! just as good as the kazoo orchestra Peel used to play!
Didgeridoo - it does wonders for my asthma, but the dog hates it!
