Please can anyone tell me a what to do with red cabbage
Very little!
Makes a wonderful base for the compost heap!!
My wife seems to like it, though I think it takes like soap.
yummy. love red cabbage me. make it into coleslaw or cook it up with some apple. if you eat raw red cabbage it makes the whites of your eyes whiter.
totally agree - love red cabbage too, especially when it's cooked long & slow with spices and apple and served hot :P
and it's all the better served up the next day (reheated, like a lot of good dishes)
Absolutely agree HP, like chilli and any casserole thingie etc etc etc...much better second time around!
Red cabbage pickled with the strongest pickling spices you can get?
;)
Phillistines!, the lot of you!! who advocate consigning it to the compost heap :o
For starters.(but only starters, mind....).....here's a link to a site I googled just now....http://foodgeeks.com/recipes/type/16,2,8,title,0,red_cabbage.phtml
Red cabbage is one of my autumn/winter staples.....Lmg Live Cavolo Rosso I say ;) ;D
Cut up fine then boil 7/8 mins drain and stir fry in a little oil with crispy bacon and toasted sesame seeds.
I made some great red cabbage chutney last year - for Christmas pressies, just use any beetroot chutney recipe, and cook for longer - very yummy!!

My staple Christmas dish:
Red cabbage sliced
Onions sliced
Garlic crushed
Sliced cooking apples
Fry the above in olive oil until crispy-tender
Slosh in red wine, brown sugar, red wine vinegar and reduce down until it looks like it's ready to eat
It makes a good summer salad for BBQs and large groups:-
SWEET & SOUR RED CABBAGE
250g / 8oz red cabbage, shredded
430g / 15oz tin red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
125g / 4oz radishes, sliced
1 small red onion, sliced thinly
1 red bell pepper, cored and diced
200g / 7oz beetroot, cooked and cut into strips
Dressing:-
4 tbs red wine vinegar
4 tbs soft brown sugar
2 tbs light soy sauce
2 tbs sunflower, safflower or grapeseed oil
Cover the cabbage with boiling water and leave for 5 minutes without further heat. Drain well.
Combine all the salad ingredients.
Combine all the dressing ingredients and taste for seasoning. Some people said it was more sweet than sour so you may want to adjust the vinegar levels.
Toss the salad in the dressing and serve. The salad benefits from being left to marinate an hour or two before serving.
why is it that everytime i've cooked red cabbage is come out bright blue and is just inedible becasue of the colour
