Title: spring onions
Post by: little pud on August 03, 2007, 12:45:26
Hi all I am new on here and need some help! I have recently had to pull all my spring onions (ball type one's) as the tops have all but died off for some reason, I have quite a few and was wandering if one of you can tell me what I can do with them? If I cut the tops off can you pickle this sort of onion.
thanks.

Let me be the first to welcome you Little Pud.  Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your question but I'll bet lots of others do.....

Hi little pud. welcome to A4A. My spring onions have done exactly the same, fortunately I only had them in  a small trough and had already eaten several. (Limited space) Will beinterested to see what the experts come up with.

A question first!

Did they form a bulb before they did this?

If they did then the leaves have done their job and are just dying back.

Now this might seem rather a silly question considering the weather we have had of late.....have they ever dried out by any chance?

Tee Gee Thank you, mine did form bulbs but as I like them small they were pulled quickly. However as they were only in a trough they could have dried out.

Sorry for coming in on your post little pud but saves repeating a question.
Lorna.

I presume you mean you have set a row of spring onions seeds and they have gone bulbous at the bottom ..I usually set a row and leave them to go like this
I top and tail mine and pickle them .. I always use a white vinegar for these .
Shall we christen them Poor man's silver skin...?  :)  They do pickle OK ..
