Hi all I am new on here and need some help! I have recently had to pull all my spring onions (ball type one's) as the tops have all but died off for some reason, I have quite a few and was wandering if one of you can tell me what I can do with them? If I cut the tops off can you pickle this sort of onion.
thanks.
Let me be the first to welcome you Little Pud. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your question but I'll bet lots of others do.....

hiya, little pud, welcome to the site . sorry, can't help with the problem, hope someone comes along soon who can ;D
Hi little pud. welcome to A4A. My spring onions have done exactly the same, fortunately I only had them in a small trough and had already eaten several. (Limited space) Will beinterested to see what the experts come up with.
Lorna.
A question first!
Did they form a bulb before they did this?
If they did then the leaves have done their job and are just dying back.
Now this might seem rather a silly question considering the weather we have had of late.....have they ever dried out by any chance?
Tee Gee Thank you, mine did form bulbs but as I like them small they were pulled quickly. However as they were only in a trough they could have dried out.
Sorry for coming in on your post little pud but saves repeating a question.
Lorna.
I have the same problem and was thinking about pickling them so I am interested in the outcome too.
I presume you mean you have set a row of spring onions seeds and they have gone bulbous at the bottom ..I usually set a row and leave them to go like this
I top and tail mine and pickle them .. I always use a white vinegar for these .
Shall we christen them Poor man's silver skin...? :) They do pickle OK ..
We use the smaller shallots for pickles but yes you can use spring onion bulbs..
Thanks for the replies everyone, sorry took me a while to say it but been busy, thanks also for the welcome's, I have unfortunatley had to bin all my spring onions as they went mouldy but will try again next year. good luck with all your gardening.
