These are mine today.Had to put canes in for the beans cos they were overtaking the sweetcorn. The squash are in there somewhere.
That looks SO good & SO healthy - but I can never understand the system.
One Squash plant would cover that area, & we have about 20. And how do you get into the jungle to find them without damaging all else?
Tim there are only two butternut squash in there and they have already grown to the outside.Am gonna try to train them around the outside of the square. I'm hoping that the sweetcorn and beans get a bit leggy at the bottom so that I can get in there. I'm only a half pint so should be ok. The cheroki trail of tears are just starting to set and there is an abundance of flowers. It's an experiment so if it doesn't work out then we won't do it again will we.
Love the photo. I've used this system for a few years now, but my beans don't look as healthy as yours. Mind you, nor does the sweetcorn this year. I certainly works, though, doesn't it?
I grow mine in a plot 20' long and 4' wide. That gives me three rows of corn, 2 squashes and 2 veg spaghettis. I sow the beans dirctly at the base of each corn and just let them go away. I use climbing Barlotto di Fuoco (or something like that) and leave them for drying.
Normally, I find the corns die down in time to let the sun in to ripen up the squash.

I made the mistake of planting sturdy bean plants next to sturdy corn plants plus just one Red Kuri squash on the outside of the square.
The beans took off much faster than the corn so I had to make a wigwam for them to climb on. The sweetcorn plants were almost smothered by the bean plants and something got at the Red Kuri just as one fruit had got to tennis ball size. Result? a total mess, no corn, no squash but plenty of beans from the four plants. Don't think I'll bother with Three Sisters next year!
