Title: Calling all DIYers - Auto-Chicken house door needed!
Post by: prink13 on July 30, 2007, 13:08:39
Hi, perhaps someone out there can help, I'm looking for an automatic door opener, either to buy or make, for my chicken house. But all that I can find is ones that open the pop-holes up and down, however I want one which will open the main door, like an ordinary door - anyone got any ideas? ???

Kathi,  I saw a solar powered one on evilBay recently.  Aparantly when the sun rises it powers a motor to open the door, and when the sun goes down the motor loses it's power supply and slowly closes.

Not sure how you make sure the chooks know about this tho!

EDIT:  Sorry,  have just re-read your post.  This is for an up and down one only.  Sorry :(

Thanks OO & Soozie, I seem to be looking for something that doesn't exist, my OH says I do this a lot!!

Thought maybe one of the many inventive A4Aers might come up with something???

You should ask your cousin Simon about this.  In 1992 he made an automatic cat flap at school for his GCSE project.  It opened to let the cat out when it was light and then closed when it was dark.  I believe the cat could get in at night but not out again.   I told him at the time that he should have patented it as I see similar ones are available to buy now.  I believe the catflap is still in our shed.  He may be able to suggest how to go about making an automatic chicken door.   :D
