Post by: Joe on July 29, 2007, 22:12:11
have got a cob nut bush in the garden and has got nuts growing for the first time.  Anyone have any ideas about when to pick them and what to do with em....

You will know when they are ready to pick because they will slip out of their outer husks and fall to the ground. You will be able to see the hard shell turning brown at the base. If you apply gentle pressure to the tip of the nut it will slip out of the husk. Probably August/September when they are ripe.
I found it better to eat them fresh rather than keep failing to store them properly.

They fall when ready but squirrels always beat me to it, so I cut the bush down, cob nut plants keep popping up in the garden and neighbours have cob nut trees now where they have been buried.
