Title: Mid- term feed for swede nd celeriac
Post by: e4e5Kt-f3 on July 29, 2007, 20:06:01
Have been advised that swede and celeriac are of the brassica family and `enjoy` high nitrogen feed.
Mine are approaching tennis ball size and looking healthy so what advice for a final boost before harvesting, please.
Had a quick look on your site TeeGee but couldn`t find either listed in the AtoZ!?!

I'm feeding my celeriac with Urea.. can't get much more nitrogen than that.. but might not be advisable later on...
and why can I not get Swede to germinate!!!

Not sure how much of a tip saddad, but I sowed the remainder of a packet of swedes that must be getting on for 5 years old.  They grew like cress.  Standard sowing technique - dig a hole and put them in.  They either grow or die.

Thanks for the tip on the high nitrogen feed though.  Mine are marble size at the moment.

Might just give the urea a miss though.

The simple answer reason is I don't grow them so I never commented on them!

If I were to grow them I would treat them like any other brassica and not feed them again after the initial top dressing I applied at planting out time.

The reason I don't feed them is is two fold;

1) If they are summer brassicas I find these grow quite fast so these would not need supplementary feeding.

2)With things like Sprouts,Savoys and Swedes that have to stand out in foul winter weather I don't want them to be too lush so again I would not feed them for this reason.

My contention is; if the ground has been well prepared in the first instance there should be no need.

Then there is the other thing Lime & Fertilisers!! these are not always compatible so again I don't bother.

Having said all that perhaps if my ground had been under water as some peoples have this year I might give things a feed in case the floods have washed the nutrients out of the soil.

Have a look at the leaves on your plants and if they are not showing any deficiency signs forget it would be my advice, just earth up your celeriac

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

Earth up Celeriac? Is that where I've been going wrong? I always thought my lack of success was down to lack of water...is earthing up important too?
