Cheers Manic. I now have to try and educate myself (with a little help from my friends) to try and get a decent colour coordination and to make sure smaller plants are not overshadowed by bigger plants. Must admit after several years of only growing fuchsias and geraniums I have found it more interesting this year.

Lovely colours, Lorna. I've just watched Carol K on GW special about colour & frankly I thought it was a load of rubbish - we should plant what we want with whatever. Me I just want colour to cheer me up - just like you do - I wouldn't give a second thought to co-ordination - just enjoy it. :)

Poppy seeds were all saved from previous year, sowed some in another part of garden but just threw remainder on ground, didn't think so many would germinate. Pity the strong winds did some damage.

Me too Lorna. I love a riot of colour in my garden, so I'm not too fussy. I only bother with height of plant. Maybe next year I'll think differently, but maybe not. ;D
Could I be cheeky and ask for some seeds of the pokeweed as mine has white flowers with shorter racemes?

Eristic. Not cheeky at all. PM me your address. Half of my plants are from seeds that A4A members have kindly sent to me. The pokewood was originally planted by a chap who did some gardening for us each week, I disliked it at first and gave it to a neighbour. Nobody knew the name of it until an A4A member named it. However, the birds must have dropped some seeds the first year because it appears all over the garden now, have yanked out several plantlets.
You will have to help me now (complete novice) The flower heads (racemes?) are now turning green and I think they then turn black, when do I collect seeds?

When the pokeweed has finished flowering you should get spikes of berries eventually turning glossy black. For seed just leave them alone until they dry and shrivel up when they are ready for harvest.
The entire plant is toxic if eaten, particularly the berries so be careful if you have young children about. Having said that, the berries are used in ethnic medicine and the roots used in cooking but require careful preparation. The variety that I have is now naturalized in Cricklewood, NW London and was probably sneaked into the country years ago as native food or medicine.
