Title: Strawberries in pots
Post by: paddy on July 25, 2007, 12:42:04
Hi all.
Has anyone tried to grom strawberries in the tower pots you can get? I lost a lot of my fruit this year to rotting after all the rain we have had in my part of Lincolnshire, so i wondered if i raise the plants  off the ground if this cures it.  It spoilt what would of been a fantastic crop.
Many thanks
Paddy

Hiya,

Ive got some strawb's in a tower at home. They do ok, but the only problem is watering them - you pour the water in the top, and it leaks straight back out of the first few openings meaning your plants at the bottom never get any!!!

Plan for next year is to place a plastic pipe down, fill around with compost and plants, fill pipe with gravel, then remove - I figure this way water will be able to get right to the bottom. On the allotment next year I'm also gonna grow them in hanging baskets

I grow some in pots in the garden - I have one of those strawberry pot thingies.  They do fine although they need lifted and thinned every year but we rarely get to eat them. I assumed it was the birds until I found our two cocker spaniels tucking in to them.
