Hi all :). Is my husband asking to much to expect his peppers to grow as big as the ones you buy in the super markets? His are half the size :( and alot thinner. Is there a secret?
Hi Lauren - any idea what variety he's got?
He might have one that produces those nice long pointy peppers (not chilli's but capsicum) rather than a block pepper.
At least he's got some fruit on his, ours aren't even in the ground yet ::)

Peppers are very much a 'variety' thing and growing indoors as against outdoors can also make a difference.

I found the yellow one the best its called 'Luteus' but I am afraid it has been taken off the market, at least my regular supplier does not sell it any more.
As luck had it I still had half a dozen seed left when I found this out so I save the seeds from it every year.
I am trying a really large one this year. The seed is from a 6"-8" diameter one I bought from a supermarket in Spain when we were buying some salad veggies.
The signs are showing already that it is going to be bigger than my other varieties so fingers crossed it will reach something like the size of the parent.
You're lucky to get some already, mine are only just flowering.
I had some last year, but they were quite small, and the flesh was thin. :(
I suppose it's mainly down to the weather.
Picked my first pepper from the greenhouse lottie yesterday, variety 'Jumbo' (25p seed from Wyvales last year), they are well ahead of the 'Lipstick' and 'Kaibi' varieties I got from Real Seeds (longer more pointy types).

I hope this isn't a case of educating granny in relation to eggs, but from growing the same variety in different sized pots, I've found that sweet peppers will grow larger peppers if they are in a larger pot, although beyond about 15 litres it doesn't make much difference. The other thing seems to be not to let them get too potbound before potting on. I don't think you'll won't get big peppers if the plant starts flowering while still in a 7" pot.
