A hedgerow on route to my daughters school has a positive bounty of goodies, a lot of which are Haws and Hips. I am not a wine maker, so any good ideas what I could do with them, I hate to see them fall to the ground and rot. Plus, again on route, there is a garden with a wonderful crabapple tree and they are just all falling to the road! Do you think it would be a real cheek if I knocked on the door and asked if I could pick enough to make some jelly???
Hi EJ
Go for it and ask perhaps you could offer them a jar when you have cooked it as a thank you. 8)
But let them get out of bed first ha ha ;)
Let us all know how you got on.
Teresa
And rose-hip syrup!!!! Good stuff.
Haws - haven't a clue (yet!).
All best - Gavin

Rosehip wine?, going to try it tonight, looks nice and simple
just a warning - rose hip syrup? - yes, wonderful health giving stuff - the children were babies and rationing was still rife - so we did it all, put the pan on 'low', forgot it and went to bed.
In the morning, there was a column of fossilised sugar which rose 2' from the pan, pan diameter, and then reached the floor. V spooky!
Pity! - Tim
The recipe I used last time (3-4 years ago?)
Ingredients:
4 cups rosehips
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
Wash rosehips and slice off the tops and tails. Boil hips and water for 20 minutes in a covered saucepan.
ESSENTIAL STEP - strain through a jelly bag or muslin. Local school kids use rosehip seeds as a source of itching powder - and it does itch! You do NOT want itching powder going through your digestive system.
Return clear juice to the pan adding the sugar. Simmer strongly for five minutes, stirring well.
Pour into sterilized (dark) glass bottles and keep in the 'fridge. Can be taken by the spoonful or diluted in water.
Healthy winters all! Gavin
YUM! Going to give that a try for sure. My mum thinks the fruit of the hawthorn/may tree is poisonous, so I shan't be experimenting with the haws. (oooo, sounds kinky...... :P)
