Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows talk here!
Post by: Heldi on July 21, 2007, 00:31:51
No I haven't read it yet!   I thought a separate thread for those that have might be useful. I am in a dilemma I don't know whether to crash into the book when it arrives in the morning or to wait for the audio and spend a few  brilliant hours listening to Stephan Fry narrate the tale.  I'm inclined towards Stephan at the moment.

Anyway see you later...much much later...enjoy.......

Got my copy from Amazon at 07.30 yesterday morning..........just finished it! 8)

I won't put any spoiler info, it took all my willpower not to look at the back whilst reading it, and I'm really glad I didn't now.

Suffice to say I really enjoyed it, best of all the books I think, quite a few loose ends tied up, and a few suprises too.......I even came over a bit teary at a few points.....must be my cold and sleep deprivation from just finishing nights! ;D

I bet the audio version will be fab, I'm sorely tempted......

Yay!!! Finished it at 3.35am. C'mon you lot!!!!
Heldi - I just love Stephen Fry - I think I may have to buy audio book too as Maya only 8 and although a big reader I think the last few are beyond her.

Hi everyone

I finished on Sunday, and so did my OH, but I am just dying for everyone else to hurry up so we can talk about it!

It really made the book so much better, not knowing how things were going to pan out. Just a few hints from JKR on Jonathan Ross, saying there was a "bloodbath" and about how she cried for a day after writing the death of one character - so everytime a character was in danger my heart was pounding.

All the other HP fans I know are being really careful about what they are saying to each other so as not to spoil it - it's killing me!

I finished it this lunch time, and have just leant my copy to my mum - she was texting me every day since i bought it to see if i'd finished it yet  ::)

Suffice to say I loved it, it was very suspenseful (is that even a word???  :D ) and kept me hanging by a thread til the last chapter.  I LOVE the ending  ;)  ;D  ;D  ;D

i would have liked maybe 3 pages less on the 'camping' bit and instead more on how lupin and his wife faired.

yep but my gut feeling is that the last book is going to be hard to film and that dead bit will not be 1/2 the film more like 10-15 min which will allow some more time for the battles :) so we might get more !!

Eventually...I listened to the whole thing last week.  Blimey I took me time didn't I !  Got through a stack of ironing though.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Really great...even had a few tears welling up. Poor Dobby! Wonder if it was his death JKR sobbed about? It was so sad.

Prof. Snape eh?  I always thought he would come good until he flew out of the window at Hogwarts..then I thought I was wrong...but I wasn't lol!

The only thing I'm not really sure about is the "nineteen years later"  Thought that was a bit naff.  I would've preferred an ending mopping up the aftermath , Fred, Lupin and Tonk's funeral.  What did they do with Voldermorts body after stuffing it in the side room? (Am I just weird?) How did Hogwarts recover? How Harry felt about Snape after all the years of hating him. That sort of thing.

Hi Heldi, the audio book sounds fascinating, i might just put it on my christmas list  ;)

SPOILER HERE TOO!!!!

I know what you mean, it didn't ring entirely true to me either the nineteen years later bit, i was thinking they must've been together a while before having the kids, etc lol  :D

I was also a bit disappointed that we didn't really get any closure on Lupin and Tonks, even tho she referred to Ted in the last chapter as I remember

I was welling up about poor Hedwig  :'(

Overall I was quite pleased with it, just a little bit unsure about the last chapter I suppose

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

It took me half the night to get over Hedwig!  I thought he was less dispensable than Harry personally.  After all Hedwig was useful, Harry just had to rely on his pals all the time.

and wasn't Dumbledore a complete b*******d !

Have put the box set on the chrissy list.  Need to get my head around some of the plots again.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER.

You know what I thought today...wouldn't it have been good to have had a conversation between Harry and Snape's portrait in the headmaster's office. Snape will have one now won't he!

Yes I would've liked a bit more closure on Lupin and Tonks.  I guess making Harry Godfather was a disaster waiting to happen lol.  Lupin was a great character and I think he deserved a good sent off !

There was a moment where I was wondering if Dumbledore was a dark wizard himself...wondered exactly what he had been up to with all the secrets he had kept from Harry.  I think I forgave Dumbledoreafter Harry realised he had had to come to the conclusions by himself and definately forgave his weaknesses after Harry had his conversation with him in the heavenly Kings Cross .

The nineteen years later..."Albus Severus"... thought that was poop tbh. That,s all we got to explain Harry's thoughts on Snape. Hope Albus Severus ends up in Slytherin haha!

My son and his friends call me Professor McGonagall.  :o  ;)  ;D

* * SPOILER * * SPOILER * *

Yeah, we never got to find out what happened to McGonagall either (I wanted her to be the new headmistress  ;) ) nor Hagrid.

Agree re Dumbledore (think I mentioned it in an earlier post actually...) but I defo forgave him in the end - he did seem genuinely sorry for what he'd done

I was a bit disappointed in the final chapter the more I think about it actually.  What a shame - I'll still read it again in a couple of months and watch it in the cinema when it comes out  ;D  ;D

Yep I thought the 19 years later bit was pants too. End of the book seemed a bit rushed to me, like she'd just got totally fed up with it.  Mind you leaves it wide open for Son/Daughter of Harry Potter I spose!

I reckon there must be quite a few of us feeling a bit bewildered  ??? by the last chapter if JK is having to answer those type of questions.

Feel a bit cynical about the encyclopedia really.

But I still think it's a cracking good story !  ;D
