Hallo all ! :) I was thilled to harvest my garlic this morning and have hung them up to dry off . I found about 8 little baby bulbs growing around the base of them ...some fell off as I took the garlic up . What should I best do with these now ..I dont want to waste anything ?
Use them if you can be bothered. I get bulbils round the bases on my elephant garlic, and justabove soil level in the stems of some of my garlic. They're OK to use, but so fiddly I don't usually bother.
Hi Robert ! No ...I meant ..er.. ..to grow on ?
You plant small garlic cloves you only get small in return.
A bloke from the Isle of Wight Garlic farm told me to plant those bits - they're not line normal bulbs, apparently. Never got round to it meself but I got the impression it's not like planting small cloves...
I tried planting mine but they did not do anything after a couple of weeks so i took them up and ate them!!
...yes ,but surely they must be ! Are they not like the "scales" or baby bulbs that grow off of daffodils ,lilies or tulips ?
oops sorry Cambourne 7 we both seemed to post at the same time ! Any way I am pleased with my harvest .
hehe great minds :-)
I think you're correct Rohaise, matey from IOW Garlic actually called them seeds which of course they're not, but I got the impression they are better/different to/than small cloves...
Oh, and I meant like, not live, of course!
Theyre regarded as seeds rather than cloves or bulbs because they take an additional year to harvest - the first year they form a bulb and the second they mature. They do take a month or so to get going though.
Have grown my elephant garlic like this for the last 2 years.
Thanks Ollie ...hey..that looks like a helpful little person you,ve got there ,beside you in your picture ! :D x
Plotofweeds .............so perhaps I would be best off potting the little things up till they are bigger then, say next year ? :-\ Rohaise x
Yes thats what I do, either in pots or in a nursery bed.
