Title: Blight resistant tomatoes
Post by: Tin Shed on July 19, 2007, 22:03:18
Seeing as so many of us have been hit by blight this year I wondered whether it might be a good idea to compare notes about the blight resistant varieties available. I am growing Legend this year and so far it seems to be coping OK. How is Ferline and Fantasio managing?
Did a google search  and came up with three other toms that other people seemed to think might be blight resistant - Veeroma, Matina and Manalucie. Has anyone ever heard of them or grown them?

Of my indoor toms several have blight on odd leaves - only one has it on a stem & that's Ferline!

This year, I grew Ferline for the first time, and dotted it amongst around a total of around 70 other plants including Marmande, Ruby, Incas, Roma.
The whole lot got caught by the blight a couple of weeks back - the Ferline was noticeably green amongst the black. They've been left in, and so far, so good. I've also planted some more seedlings of the main varieties that were knocking about, they haven't been affected by blight. These seedlings were in a sheltered spot, and to be honest if I hadn't got the blight so early I would probably have chucked them, so am lucky to be able to plant them.

"Blight Resistance" is a very large phrase!

I would interpret  any marketing hyperbole on the subject as "has some blight resistance".

I grew Fantasio last year. As a pseudo-scientific experiment I sprayed a couple of them with copper fungicide but left the rest. Other plot holders got blight in early Sept; the unsprayed Fantasio succumbed a couple of weeks later; the sprayed Fantasio were ok.

This year, a neighbouring plot holder grew Fantasio next to Tamina. He did not spray at all. Tamina got the blight a couple of weeks ago and it subsequently spread to the Fantasio .. he has now lost the lot.
