Title: Yellow Courgette
Post by: killerflies on July 19, 2007, 13:22:52
Howdy Folks,

I was given a few Yellow Courgettes this year and they are finally beginning to bear fruit/courgette.

They seem to be a round yellow ball!!?? Is that right?

Ive never grown courgette before and to be honest I thought that I was given the classic green long thing but Im clueless as to when they are ready for picking and what I need to do to get as many as possible.

Any pointers?

Can I store them, I presume I can expect a glut of them???

And finally...........any favourite yellow courgette recepies?

..sounds like a variatly called one ball, you can get yellow cougettes that are the traditional shape.

They dont last long enough here for me to keep them and non of my courgettes have formed fruit yet :(

You can use yellow courgettes exactly as youwould green - there is a thread on here with recipes using courgettes already this year and if you use 'search' I am sure you will find more, it is a topic which comes up every year.

I like yellow courgettes better as the ones I grow have a slightly sweeter flavour and hardly need any cooking.  As long as you keep your plants fed and watered you should get plenty, and pick the courgettes often to encourage more to grow.

Enjoy!

By the way, you cannot store them.

Enjoy them in season!

On the subject of yellow courgettes, has anyone else had germination problems with Parador? I got only 3 plants out of 3 packets!

Cannot comment on Parador, but Jemmer has given a similar yield this year, my current success approaching nil.

Parador is a bit slow to germinate but so far almost all mine have grown.

as for storing, I freez them, dont even blanch and we were eating them well into the next year. But that is putting them into food frozen.

cook them in a covered pan in olive oil with garlic, black pepper and chilli for 30 mins then put them in a jar in the fridge to use as a spread.

Tesco had round, yellow courgettes for 89p each when I was in there this evening!  I was tempted to buy one to use the seeds next year but then thought they may not be ripe.

Thanks! It's more a reflection of the killer trout flies I tie than dancing with wolves, but its all good!  8)

Thanks one and all for the replies, I had my first few SMALL yellow courgettes lightly sauted and they were lovely. Ive gone and hand pollinated a few of the flowers to see if I can get a bigger beasty. Im thinking that the small ones I am getting are the unpollinated flowers/fruit. Time will tell however.

Ill keep ye updated!
