Hi Unsure whether this is the right place for this request but here goes. I am looking for a battery operated strimmer for my allotment can anyone recommend a reasonably priced one (like all of us a bargain would be good ::))that is sturdy enough to cope with all that will be thrown at it on the average allotment, it's a tall order :-\
you might be better hiring a petrol one for a couple of days to tackle to weeds.

It uses a little plastic blade rather than conventional strimmer line. The blades wear down and have to be replaced, though, just like line. But it's very effective for lighweight jobs, or working near plants that you don't want to damage.
The battery lasts a reasonable time for what we use it for. Perhaps an hour at most.
I wouldn't recommend it or any battery strimmer for all-purpose allotment use though.
And it isn't that cheap, either. You can get a Ryobi petrol strimmer at B&Q at the moment discounted for the same price, and that'll work perfectly well for all but the toughest allotment jobs.

Agree only good for tidying up, but very good at that. Probably find you'll need a spare battery.

That Ryobi looks a bargain to me. Mine cost £80ish a couple of years ago. It has been a godsend though, takes on most things without a problem and puts up with dreadful neglect from me...I must remember to empty the fuel out over the winter, I really must!

Thanks to everyone for their comments. The requirement is for keeping the edges of my grass pathways well manicured, my allotment neighbour uses a sythe ( not sure of spelling) but I'm afraid of chopping my feet off! Have visited B & Q today and like both options recommended by Melbourne12, as you say very light to handle, will be dragging OH for second opinion over the weekend.
