Title: Has anyone been to Kew recently?
Post by: Georgie on July 18, 2007, 20:59:19
I'm planning a day out at Kew towards the end of August with a friend who has never been there before (and I haven't been for a couple of years).  We're taking a picnic - yes that's still allowed - but I'd welcome your advice on what  'should not to be missed' at that time of year.  Thanks.   :)

we went to kew app 4 years ago and i have to say don,t choose to have your picnic by the lake. we did and were joined by the usual ducks and a heron whose beak looked very iffy then from behind our seat came a peacock the ducks withdrew and the big bird started competing over us !! not a peaceful picnic left hungry but with plenty of pics
have a good day wish i was going

We went to Kew for the first time in March and had a great time, sadly the massive display of Daffodils that they had was over and we were too early for the spectacular blossom.

I'm not sure what would be the best to look at for the time of year but all I would say is don't miss out on the Temperate house and the Palm house, these are both iconic buildings that Kew is known for and they are fantastic Victorian structures, the best bit was to be able to go to the top of them and walk around the gallery looking down on it all.

We loved it.

Georgie, I'm a regular Kew visitor - probably about once a month!

It's a bit difficult to suggest what to visit really because I love it all. The glasshouses are always worth a visit, my favourite is the Princess of Wales house, especially the dry arid section. The new alpine house is worth a visit but won't take much looking around but the rockery next to it is good. The grasses area also near the alpine house will be looking good I would think at the end of August.

I think it is really a case of taking your time & spending as long there as you can.

I really want to go but it is so far from Manchester. Seed banks, Biodiversity and Conservation are all really heavily covered on the new A level syllabus starting in 2008 (biology). I am going to try to convince the department that a trip is essential! That way I can have a free visit hehe!!

That's a thought; it's all in the Environmental Science syllabus as well. I'll see what can be done.
