Hi. I was just wondering whether, like Sweet Peas, edible peas would benefit from having their tendrils pinched out?

Never tried it but I guess they would.
novice question, but why would they benefit?
Because they would put more energy into producing the pods rather than the tendrils.

Thats just what I was about to say. :)
Ahhh, okay, I thought the reason growers nipped the tendrils out was to stop them twining around the flowers and bending the stems. ???
I think it's for both reasons on the ornamentals, EJ.

How are they supposed to support themselves (and each other) if you take off the tendrils?
The one's I'm growing are 'Half Pint' and are only 12-18 inches high. They don't really need support.

Do a trial, nip the tendrils of half of them!
I am with EJ on this.Tendrils are nipped off sweet peas so they don't wrap around stems of flowers on adjoining pea..When removed the plant has to be tied and supported .
I think even low growing edible peas need their tendrils to support themselves by attaching to adjoining plants of pea or to the peasticks etc that we push into the sides of them . If removed I think they would just lay flat on floor making them more susceptible to rot etc...
I think to increase crop of edible peas. Set more peas to the square foot ...
Whats others think ?
Some like Bikini have been bred to have more tendrils than leaves..
If you want more per space grow old tall varieties...
:-\
That's not an option, Saddad. I can only grow my edibles in pots and I've found that the taller varieties simply don't fair well.
Growmore. I'm using some supports obviously but I still don't think the plants need as many tendrils as they produce.
allaboutliverpool. That's a good idea. I'll try that next year.
