Title: Question for the girlies
Post by: Mrs Ava on July 15, 2007, 19:05:13
What to do before holiday, wax or buy and epilator?  Which is the most painful?  I have waxed before and I know how much is bl**dy hurts, I am assuming an epilator is equally painful.

Thanks in anticipation of smooth leg agony!

Wax, wax, wax! Painful but so worth it. I found epilating absolute agony and it's not quick like waxing. Your legs are red raw for ages. You may as well pull each one out with tweezers.  :o :o :o
Go get it done at salon though - I don't recommend home waxing - I did it once and had to get OH to do 1 and a half legs as I totally bottled it after the first few strips.  ;D ;D ;D ;D
Either way - have fun!

Oh, it's so much fun being a girl... ;D

I wax.  Never used an epliator - they just look like torture machines !  I use the stuff that you heat up in the microwave.  For me, I'd say it is more painful in a salon - when you do it yourself you can prepare and distract yourself (or yowl in the privacy of your bathroom !)

Get the pot with a wooden spatula, don't mess about with the ones with their own tank - rubbish.  Plus if you wimp out or realise tea is burining you can wash the wax off  ;D

Waxed my legs for years then finally secumbed to shaving. think a good razor and moisturizer is as good - yes it does need doing every other day... but i found after a week hair was growing back anyway and after two weeks they looked a bloody mess but werent long enough to wax again... then theirs the red blotchiness that lasts a couple of days.

Wouldnt wax again i dont think. LOL... its bad enough getting my eyebrows done and im sure my pain threshold is getting les and less each time

I only want to wax before going away so I have smooth legs for the hols and don't have to worry about shaving them.  What a grim conversation!  It does hurt - I use those strips and it is fine on the front boney part of my leg, but on my fleshy calves BOY does it hurt.  I will see how I get on, but I think an epilator has now been discounted.  Thanks ladies (and boys) you have saved me over forty quid!  :D

my friend swears by her epilator even uses it for her arm pits she says it is like its own form of anaesthetic. and the more you use it the less that grow back

The Spar supermarket in the town centre is putting the (area?) manager through torture. He apparently has very hairy legs but he has agreed to get them waxed if loads of people sponsor him for the NSPCC!

Ouch!

I tried one of those things where you put a needle like thing down each hair and it electronically zaps the hair.  It seemed to work without pain but took ruddy ages with my overly hairy legs.

Used to resort to shaving in the end - the thought of waxing was much too terrifying: I've had enough agony with wound dressings lately.

And before anyone comments - it was because I used to be a racing cyclist  ;)

I shave, tried wax, gave up on it!!
I do not shave during the winter, then in the summer once a week or fortnight is enough. The more you shave the more you will need to!!

My beloved of 25+ years shaves, with my razor if she can get it, it's wasted on me as I love her either way ( hairy or not) but she says the red hairs look stupid poking through her tights!

ACE I know what you are getting at ..you naughty boy  ;)  ;D

I prefer a racing stripe.  :o

I have an epilator. It gets less painful the more you do it but I keep leaving it and then you have to build up your resistance again. BLimey I couldn't even think about doing it on my pits though !! I've waxed too but I find I get more in-grown hairs by waxing and epilating. Don't know why  ???   I shave now though I prefer the feel of an epilated leg lol!

Flex them as you rip the strip away ... are you using the cold strips ?  they are complete b*****ds

Yes, cold strips.  I am now contemplating going back to the good old fashioned razor blade as my test strip yesterday has left red dimples on my leg.  Sexy!  :'(  The things us girls (and some boys) do!!

The new Gilette Fusion is really good - much better than girlie razors. Bought OH one then had to go buy my own. (red sticky tape on mine!!)

what about then there creams that dissolve the hair pain free? not a girl but if i was, i'd go for that  ;D

I bet more blokes have read this thread than girls too! ;)

those creams aren't very nice :( if you have any break or scratch in your skin, no matter how tiny, it sort of eats into you as it dissolves the hairs â€" I tried it once and ended up with scars like chickenpox craters :o and I remember reading somewhere that one of the chemicals it uses (sodium thioglycolate) is toxic in small doses to mice, rats and guinea pigs... not very nice at all!

I have tried the creams, and apart from the fact they sting and stink, they don't do a very good job for me.  I likes my legs smooooooooooooooth and hair free when lounging in the sun.  What about those lady razors that vibrate??

Many years ago my son fell asleep at a party (?) at a girl's house.  It was in the early hours of the morning. The other blokes at the party raided her bathroom and found some cream, which they rubbed in his hair.  Didn't read the label, of course.
Eventually he woke up, got home at about 8.30 and straight into the shower. A knock on my bedroom door - great chunks of hair had fallen out in the shower, and he looked as though the rats had been at his head. Hadn't a clue what had happened!!!!  I guessed immediately, but the girl was not happy, and made the blokes apologise.  Pretty dangerous, really, could have got into his eyes, could have had an alergic reaction ... ... He had a job explaining at work though!

OMG Asbean.  I have been to parties where boys have shaved eyebrows off other boys who were legless, and I didn't approve  ::) but all over his head!

Depends upon how much you're wanting to show - where - Emma?

It can be VERY painful??

I had a lady shave is taht what you mean EJ??? If so dont bother - total waste of money as they dont cut the hairs close enough.

Get a fusion razor - mens one... offer on at asda and boots at the moment - got a razor and 7 blades for 7 quid and one blades lasts ages as its sooooooooooooo sharp.

Not a lady shave OO, regular wet shaving razors but I'm sure they have a battery in it....mc55  :o ;).

Tim, I plan to show enough in France to make the boys say 'Oo lah lah' and not 'Oo my gawd!'.

I have phases of using an epilator (you do get used to it in time and the bonus is that the hair really does seem to get less and pits are quick and easy if you hold the skin taught, but you have to be a bit of a contortionist.) and cold wax. If you have a good buff up with a dry loofa first it stops ingrowing hair.
Now waxing eyebrows.....that's excruciating. :o

I'd go for waxing, although if your holiday is soon, then it won't be that successful - your leg hairs grow in cycles so when you wax the first time there are still loads of little ones that didn't get taken off, so you have to grow them again and wax AGAIN  :-X !  Then they will be smoother, but the more you do it the better they get.  And yes, deffo go to a salon, at least they are quick so the pain lasts less time!
:)

I wax my bikini line and underarms at home with the wax you heat in the microwave. It doesn't hurt that much.  TIP for waxing is put talc onto the skin first - works much better then!  ;)

I shave my legs.  Tried waxing and it's too much hassle and doesn't work as well on my legs for some reason.  Also tried an epilator and didn't get on well that either.

Had a bikini wax at the beauty salon a year or so ago and the poor woman kept apologising. I was saying that it was fine and it wasn't hurting and she was stunned - she apparently ended up in tears begging them to stop when she'd had it done!   WUSS!   ;D ;)

I get mine waxed when I can afford it and am organised enough to book in advance (i.e.not often!). otherwise I use cream- takes longer but I do find the creams are better than they used to be, if a bit messy. Always shavw my underarms, though.
